What needs to be done is very dependent on the condition of the turntable, and also to a great extent on which model it is.

Usual checklist would be:
1) Tonearm is moving freely left and right, up and down
2) If auto or semi auto, does those functions work properly?
3) If belt driven, what is the condition of the belt
4) Condition of stylus
5) Condition of connectors and connecting wire (from turntable to amp) including grounding wire
6) General cosmetic condition of the TT
7) If plinth is made of chip board or MDF, their integrity
8) Does platter spin freely?
9) How long does the platter spin if you spin it with a push of your fingers?
10) Are there any scrapping sound or any unusual sound during operation (mechanical noise, I mean)?
