I have a Q Acoustics M20 speakers connected to a vinyl record player. I have it set up in my 33 X 12 living room space, which is partially partitioned by a glass/wood wall. I want to add in a subwoofer to fill the room, at the same time, do not want a boomy bass. I am thinking of getting the REL Tzero sealed sub, but I am worried if that will fulfill my requirement. This is a rented space, and the inbuilt AV units in both the drawing and the living room are too small to place the M20 speakers and the record player. I have a console table placed at the spot marked by the red rectange in the below image. Basically, there's no other spot in the entire hall where I can place the stereo system. I also have a budget of 50K for the subwoofer.

Would REL Tzero sub be apt for this room size?

Other subs that I have in consideration -
  • Taga Harmony TSW-212 SE
  • BIC America F-12
Would greatly appreciate any recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Hi :)

Your room is wide and open. But for 2 channel music it wont be an issue to fill out that space upto moderate volume. Party levels wont be possible, nor rumbling bass for movies. But should be fine for 2 channel music, and the closer you sit the better.

I've never heard the Rel T zero, though they usually punch above the the expected output for a 6.5 inch bass driver. But since your speakers are from Qacoustics, you can also consider two of their slimline models which are only 150 mm deep ( The Rel is 260mm deep ) and are also wall mountable under the console if you so choose. Both the Qacoustics 3060S and 7060 S come with an 8 inch driver that is slot loaded and fires onto an iternal baffle to better distribute bass in the room.

I've been living with the tiny 7060S for almost a decade now in my living room HT system, and placed right upto the back wall, and with heavy sofa's to its right and left, there is enough boundary gain in the bass to fill out my much larger room very nicely. Iam surprised at the potent bass output for a single 8 inch driver. But please do bear in mind, that compared to other subs, the Qacoustics are still not the most impactful, fastest or deepest. But they blend seamlessly with my Qacoustics concept floor standers and dont take up much floor space doing so. So the 7060S has stayed with me.

The 3060S is cheaper than the Rel T zero. But on specifications, has similar bass output upto 35hz @-3db. Just opening up options to consider. All the best :)

I guess I am bit confused from the image.
The red rectangle is behind the dining table.
So you're never going to be in the center position of the stereo system.
You'll fill the space with sound and all you're trying to do is get more bass out of it? Is this a correct way to think about it?

If from what you hear of the room, you think its difficult to get bass or low frequencies out of the room, I'd say say to get a sub woofer of the same size but ported, so you get a bit more extension.
Yes, a ported sub is less accurate but I also think accuracy isn't the goal here so that should be okay

You're right. My listening space will be the living/dining area on the right. The M20s work perfectly without a need for a sub in my 12 X 12 bedroom, but the missus wants the system in the living area for "aesthetic" reasons :). If I have to go with ported subs, which one would you recommend? I have the below ones in mind, considering my budget constraint -

  • Taga Harmony TSW-212 SE
  • BIC America F-12
  • Polk HTS 10

Thanks. I will reseach on these subs. I should add that a dealer has quoted 45k for the T Zero, which I think is a pretty reasonable amount.

The T Zero is much too small for that room. (From the experience of using a T5i). If you look in the Classifieds here, you might something more appropriate for that room in your budget.
