That's a very general statement . What model and what make ?
Very little chance that you will get the one you want easily. But do look around , one can never be too sure ! The Net is your best friend !
I'd never buy a stylus unless it was in it's original packing and unopened. On Ebay even that doesn't ensure you are getting a new unit unless it's from a known supplier. Safer to buy from a large reseller.
The best option might be to buy a new cartridge ! Often the ( genuine) replacement stylus will be almost as expensive as the whole cartridge !

Agree with your post except the part in the quote.
At least in India, one can have the stylus for much cheaper than the cartridge. However, for the west, what you have said is probably true.
I bought OEM Stylus for my M44-7 cartridge for about 2K a few months ago. The cartridge was retailing around 7K at that time.
