I have finally ordered for my start up HT package. :yahoo:

This includes Yamaha RXV 481 AVR and Taga 606 SE 5.0 speakers. Speaker package arrived and waiting for the AVR to set up the HT. AVR is expected in another 2 days time. The total package cost me 65K. Many FMs here who supported me and guided me to make this purchase of which Elango and Gcr deserves special mentioning and thanks.

Speaker wires plannig to go for 16 gauge speaker cables for rears and 14 gaguge speaker cables for front towers and center. Confused if I should go for a stabilizer or surge protector for the AVR.

Planning to give a review of the package through this thread once the system is set up and ready to sound so that it will help other beginners. Request all of your support in setting up the system and further tuning.

Looking forward to this. I am planning for my first HT as well. Planning to go for the budget tv 55 vu iconium and a HT system instead of blowing the budget on an expensive branded tv.

Congratulations for the purchase.

Enjoy the setup and do share the pic when it's set.

Cheers!

@ nipunkx - Congratulations....dont forget to post pics and your review on the system which will help others.

@ melwyns - depending on what budget you have set aside for the HT, audition as many systems as you can, you can also look at pre owned stuff on olx / hifiads / For Sale by Owner section......

I don't trust people selling on OLX..I am keeping my eye on the hifiads for anyone looking to upgrade and sell off their existing system.

What abt the special offers ad on notices? Are they worth pursuing?

Congrats nipunkx for your HT.
Eagerly waiting to hear from you how is Yamha + Taga pairing once the setup is running.

@ melwyns,

OLX is a nice place, there are dealers and even individuals who are selling good stuff....you can always discuss, visit the seller and close the deal.....obviously you need to audition / check before purchase...thats one good advantage.....

I have purchased in the past from OLX/QUIKR and never faced any challenges...

You need to check and decide....all the best

And finally the review that I promised:

Received the HT set up Friday (13-01-2017). Since I purchased the AVR from ProFX Kochi, their technichians carried the AVR to my house by evening and did the installation neatly. I used 16 gauge profx cables for rear and 14 gauge profx cables for towers and center channel. Setup was completed by night and the HT included RPI connected to AVR's input HDMI port and AVR's output HDMI port connected to TV.

Played Deepwater Horizon DTS HD MA file through RPI first. The technicians cranked the volume up to 60-65 out out 97 to get a enjoyable theater effect with decent bass from the towers. They mentioned that the HT will sound even good once a sub-woofer is introduced.

Played few indian songs and speakers sounded abosultely clear and crisp no matter what the volume was set to. The beats are there as well as warmth of sound was felt very well. With a volume level of 55-65 out of 97 I am getting the music to a level that can be also enjoyed by neighbors (sound flowing out of my house) and not had the courage to crank the volume above 70 as it was so loud even for the neighboring houses. But Taga 606SE speakers performed well and could not fins and issues.

Few doubts that I have:

  1. Since i am using RPI, i was getting only PCM out put and not true DTS HD MA from AVR. If i purchase a blu ray player will it be able to play these file through its USB port and give DTS HD MA to AVR?
  2. Though I have the best downloaded blu ray files with DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD audio, I feel like I am not getting proper effects from the surrond channels. Feels like the surrond effect is missing (it is there but not very powerful sound from rears to surpirse me with surrond effects). Is there any settings in the AVR that can be done to get better surrond sound feel?

I am just giving time for the speakers to blend in and may be can post an update in a weeks time. Until then if you have any queries or suggestions please do post it.
Once again thank you all for helping me in setting up this AVR.

Hi

Impressive!

Give time for the speakers to break in and provide optimal performance.

You can refer to the Yamaha manual for best settings....a good blu ray player also makes the difference and what kind of signals are sent to AVR......i keep mine on BitStream.....

Congrats once again......i am sure if you get the TSW200 or SW10 sub (taga), you will be on Cloud 9!

Taga 606se fronts have 91db sensitivity which is more than surrounds and center. After burn in period, they will open.Yet you need to adjust speaker levels to match to fronts.

:yahoo:Congrats dude. looking at the pics i can only say they look quite nice. But i think you could pad the room a bit . every time i see them shiny floors and scarcely furnished room , I wonder how much the room echo is effecting the over all sound.May be you can throw a area rug on the floor and see if it makes any difference. Usually improves imaging quite a bit with a little taming of the high frequencies. happy listening.:clapping:

Thanks for your valuable comments Spirovious. I am not sure where I can find the settings to adjust the speaker levels specific for rear channels.
Can any Yamaha AVR owners please help on this?

Thanks for the valuable suggestions Tuff. I will suerly add a area rug in between the Tv and the sofa to get some improvments in audio performance.

Run ypao setup if you haven't already, as suggested put a thick carpet large enough cover from speakers to sitting area.
Also buy 12awg speaker cables for all speakers if budget permits, don't differentiate between surround and towers etc, if you intend a true immersive dts experience. You'll definitely hear a difference with 12awg cables . Bluray player will have options to select digital or pcm audio.

Congratulations, they look awesome.

I have no idea about RPI and setting options available. You could look for "bit stream" or "raw" out option and let the AVR decode.

Instead of a blu-ray player I think you will be better off with a good media player like HiMedia Q5 Pro or Q10 Pro.

Enjoy your new set up!

You can enter yamaha setup and the speaker setup. There you need to turn on "Test tone"
Then go to speaker level and adjust listening to test tone.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
