sam9s 2nd Rasp Pi Project! Personal Cloud powered by Tonido

Hi Friends,

Sharing with you another Project that I did on Raspberry Pi this weekend.

Tonido is a server application that you can install on a Windows, Linux or OSX machine and can have your own personal cloud running in minutes. Tonido Server allows you to access all your files on your computer from a web browser, smartphone, tablet or even DLNA enabled devices from anywhere across the world.

It is very much like any cloud service like Dropbox or Google Drive, where you have access to your media and documents from internet, and you also have a sync client, much like google drive that you can install on number of machines to sync files from your cloud.

Since its your own cloud you dont have to upload anything to these services, all you need is to copy all your files and media on a dedicated machine and install Tonido, which immediately converts your machine in to fully dedicated personal cloud.

Some of the very distinct features that make Tonido different from the usual cloud services are ...

1. Works universally, windows, Linux, Mac and all major mobile phones tablets supported. Including iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone.

2. Works on Raspberry Pi, so you can have your own tiny 35USD cloud service running in minutes.

3. Auto backup of photos from your phone to your cloud without intervention.

4. Have your own Logo and Branding on the webpage and also can have your own domain name pointing to your server to make things more professional.

5. Best of all everything is completely free ....

I have installed Tonido on both Rasp Pi and Windows and both worked as expected. However with Rasp Pi, since its linux and does not have its own storage (except the meek sd card) you have to mount an external storage, like I did. (Synology NAS). This would require to run certain linux commands. But if you are running the server on windows, you dont need to do anything. Just install the application and you are good to go.

Few of the other features include .....

1. TonidoDrive:: Which allows to access your remote cloud server as a network drive on your Windows based PC

2. Tonido Sync Client:: Download and install the sync client on every computer to sync your files with your server. Much like DropBox or Google Drive client works.

3. No need for DDNS:: No need to have DDNS that you would point to your server. Tonido uses its own relay server to provide access to your cloud, so once you create an account, like in my case (sam9scloud) you can access your server via link http://<youraccountname>.TonidoID.com. Which in my case is sam9scloud login

In synology we already have synology cloud what is the difference with Tonido? any extra features..

There are couple of differences ....


1. you can set up your own cloud for as less as 35 USD (Rasp Pi) or at the most 7-10K (including HDD) if you do decide to purchase a dedicated hardware.(or use any old computer) Synology on the other hand is an expensive device, the cheapest 2 drive itself is 15K without the HDD. So one cannot purchase synology just for having a dedicated cloud, however if you already have synology (like I do) then yes its cloud station can be used (though it still has its limitations, read below point 3)

2. Also synology cloud look and feel cannot be customized

3. In synology You cannot have a dedicated domain just for the cloud. There is no dedicated url that would take you to your cloud share directly. In synology, cloud share acts just like any other share, so you can only access it via file station or via VPN.
Plus Synology Cloud station is feature that would only sync between your synology NAS and the client computers where the cloud station client is installed.

4. Tonido is much like DropBox cloud where you have a dedicated url, a dedicated web interface where you can download/upload and execute your media as well, right from the browser. Plus it also has the sync feature obviously.

BTW I am not using the Synology Cloud feature, however another ultimate synology feature call Cloud Sync is something I am using extensively.

Hi Sam, thanks for the write up. Just wanted to know if the raspberry pi can detect an external hdd let's say 1 tb which is not powered. Mine recognizes thumb drives but not hdds. Could it be in account of the udb dac connected to it (dragonfly) consuming more power?

You need to use a powered usb hub and try to connect all devices through that.

Oh I Love Music , and from all era, right from KL Saigal to Arijit Singh .... but yes 90s ... well I was in my teens in 90s. The school days, the college days, the romantic girl friend days .... all was a part of the 90s and all are so unforgettable, so the music related to that era is also so special to me ......

No you need a powered USB HUB and that too a good one, to attach an external HDD, though I would suggest using your NAS (if you have one) to mount the drives in Linux on RaspPi running Tonido. That was it would appear as a local drive and will be accessible from anywhere from Tonido Online portal.

Thanks sam9s for the tonido idea. I just installed the same on my vortex-box and it works perfectly. A very good option to listen to my music library while I am away.

I also figured out a way to automatically rip VCD/SVCD to my vortex-box yesterday :yahoo:. I have a huge collection of VCDs and was wondering how to rip and save it for a while.

I am using a combination of MEncoder (encoder that comes with MPlayer in linux) and some custom configuration in vortex-box to automatically rip VCD/SVCD to .avi format.
