sam9s NAS Project! powered by Unraid!!

@manniraj any update/Progress ....

Oh no sam I have installed the OS and did a dry run. My sister's old case had some problems with the PSU placement, hence ordered a cooler master 343 case from flipkart. Waiting for the shipment. I have taken the backup of my 2TB WD internal HD from my htpc to my external HDD. I am planning to put in this 2TB into the NAS and copy all my movies/music/photos into it. My brother has booked another couple of 2TB yesterday during the Independence day deal for $99 shipped in US and my parents will be bringing it in Sept. So in total I am planning to have 6TB of space. I have also ordered some cat 6 cables thru my brother :p a pack of 10 for $10 :clapping: each 5ft. I have also asked him to book this gigabyte switch.
I am making sure that I will make him bankrupt soon...:ohyeah:

Thanks

^^ mmmm looks you are all set for a rocking NAS. :D I am also planning to prepare the part two of the same thread. Its been a year this article has been posted, so time to put the part two as well ....... few pretty nifty features I have added, which I will also share in the part two of this article.

Eagerly awaiting sam. Will try to build mine by next weekend as the delivery of the case in by next Friday in flipkart. Maybe I will have made my hands wet with this build so I can concentrate on enhancing/tweaking etc., also will post why the D-link LAN card is not getting recognized. I have already taken the backup yesterday of 1.5TB and so my HDD is ready for NAS.

Thanks

I am sure the costs of building has also increased significantly esp. for the hard drives. I guess the total costs for a 4 TB NAS would now become close to 25k.

My total cost of the build (excluding HDD) is around 10k. So you can add a 2 *2TB drives at the cost of 14k (apprx) so the cost comes to around 25k your damn right.

thanks

I dont think anything has changed as far as the same segment hardware goes, except the obvious Hard Drives.

Hi sam,
A question, if I build a mini ITX based NAS and run Unraid on it, for the time being I will not be keeping provisions for HDD bays internal or external and using USB drives only for sharing over network. However if in future I add one of these to the USB, will unraid still detect the SATA drives individually even if they are not connected to the mobo using the mobo on board sata ports? Or is it the case that they will all appear as one big single drive to Unraid?

Frankly speaking, Unraid should not be used as a storage NAS only with USB drives. There is no point if you are not using any Internal HDDs. I am not sure how Unraid will behave if there is no internal HDD and we just connect a USB drive. But technically any USB drive connected to Unraid is not a part of the array and is independent of the internal HDDs....

If for any reason you are only planning to attach USB drives in all purpose that synology product you shared would be more suited I guess ....

I think that was the answer I was looking for and probably unraid might also have issues if I upgrade later on to a sata rack external to the mobo that has one multiplexed SATA bus supporting multiple drives. Hence I am thinking the best bet would be either to go for the synology USB NAS or if I want flexibility then DIY NAS but with a sata disk inside / outside cabinet which can allow usage of built in SATA ports.

One question regarding the UNRAID bootable usb drive. I got a 8gb old pendrive which I unzipped the unraid and used it to boot on my earlier NAS. It booted without any issue. Now I got my new case so installed all the items and used a very small 4gb sandisk usb drive in which I again unzipped the unraid files and tried to boot. I did make the changes in the BIOS to boot first from the Removable disk (but in the case of 8gb drive it used to show as usb:mass storage) but nothing happens the cursor just blinks on the top left hand corner. So I removed the tiny 4gb usb drive and replaced it with my old 8gb usb drive. The system immediately booted without any issues. The reason I opted for the tiny sandisk is I can neatly hide the drive when I put in the case. Not sure what is the problem.

Thanks

unRAID installs are locked to the Unique Device ID of each USB stick.

You mean to say that the unraid is locked to my usb stick with the details mapped to my motherboard. I am having this doubt as except the usb stick everything else is the same in the chain. Now if I have to use a new usb stick (new install) to the same motherboard how do I go about it.

Thanks

But I have downloaded the free version and did not have any registration key for the same. As I require at max only 3 drives currently hence did not opt for the registration key which gives another 3 drives support. So I am not sure what is that they can give me if I mail them. And also how do I get the uuid details of my pen drives.

Thanks

Thats is only when you have a purchased license for it, othwewise any usb should run with the free version.

You can send email with new uuid of the usb drive. They will disable the old and send a new license

Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2

I am sure he is using thet free version in which case no UUID is mapped/locked.

Manniraj, seem like some issue with the pendrive itself. Did you try formatting thet USB stick and then unzipping unraid from the original downloaded source....if it still gives problems, you will have no option except to opt for a different drive, Its rare but it happens sometimes.

I followed the same steps for unzipping the unraid files to the new usb stick. I think the problem might be with the usb stick itself. I brought this usb stick from flipkart. It is nice small which is not visible even on my laptop, hence thought of using the same to hide it on my NAS case. I think I will try to install in my another usb stick and see if it is the same problem will update by weekend.

Thanks

I am running with so many problems with unraid, not able to get the IP address assigned to the NAS. Hence loaded FreeNAS and it is working without any issues till now. But the problem is that whenever I reboot the NAS my Netgear router dynamically assigns a IP. Hence everytime I need to login to the NAS and see what is the current IP and use the same to get the Webgui. Not sure what I should do as I do not a static IP address, my Airtel modem is connected to the wireless router and I have hard wired the router to the NAS.
Today even with the new IP address I am not able to get the webgui on my laptop. But I am able to get the shared drive shown up in windows explorer in my laptop and htpc.

Thanks
