Hello everyone,

We are planning to buy a 46 inch TV and the budget is ~ 1 - 1.5 lac for our home in Vizag by the 15th of August this year.

My brother likes the Samsung D7000 model with its thin bezel. I am thinking of Sony HX820 and its gorilla glass.

The TV is for my tech-friendly mother; she skypes regularly and enjoys watching south indian and north indian TV channels.

My questions are:

1. Should I buy in a showroom in Vizag or should I go to Chennai or Hyderabad or Bangalore to buy one? I heard some mention buying in the grey market? What constitutes grey market in India?

2. Any thoughts on Samsung D7000 vs. comparable Sony models? I have not seen a thread for D7000 yet.

Looking forward to upgrading from an old 26 inch CRT Aiwa :yahoo:

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and will keep the forum updated on our progress!

Grey market is a place where you can buy stuff for a cheaper price compared to showroom, trade off is you don't get bill and the 1 year warranty on these tvs.

D7000 rival is the HX820 but its not yet launched in asia.So it won't be avialable even in grey market. You may however find the NX720 which also has the gorilla glass and has the same edge lit local dimming of the HX820 but lacks the X-reality Pro processor and motionflowXR400,rather the NX720 has the motionflowXR200.

So both the tvs are quite good, since the samsung is the only one available the choice is obvious.

Where did you demo the HX820?

Pardon my ignorance, I did not see NX720 on Sony India website. Is it slated for launch soon? NX710, which is available, does not Skype.

No, I have not seen a demo in person of HX820 although I am in the US. I did not see it in major electronic outlets like BestBuy here yet. We have a Sony World in Vizag, which I feel is reassuring in terms of reliable service.

I came across Infibeam.com selling TVs for a low price relative to the MRP. Is it a reliable place, and is it the kind of grey market that the members of this forum refer to? If one buys a TV online, does the local Sony World honor the warranty for one year?

Are newer models like HX820 likely to be available on the grey market by August?

One more question I have concerns Skype performance in Samsung and Sony. Is there any perceptible difference?

Thanks a lot, this is a great forum for a newbie like me!

May I ask what is the best price one has found for the Samsung 46D7000 please? Is that with or without 3D glasses?

@shaiju

HX820 is not launched in India yet. So no place to get a demo right now. You can read reviews on the 2011 Sony Bravia lineup, even the NX720 which is a segment below D8000 delivers better PQ. HX 820 is even better than NX720 with X Reality PRO chip.

^^ Small correction
Serious money for THE best Tv of 2011 with outstanding PQ. Demo it once and you will forget about the price.

And it is much better value for money than last year when NX710 46" was selling for same price which was just a mid range TV. HX925 is the Sony flagship with full local dimming.

@Smart

NX720 and HX820 should be available in India soon in a month or so. I would strongly suggest you get the NX720 or HX820 compared to the Samsung offerings as the PQ on both NX720 and HX820 is better. Demo both the NX720 and HX820 when they become available

NX720 is going to be launched officially ,you may find it in the grey market.

AFAIK HX820 won't be launched in S,SE,ME asia so you won't find it even in grey market.

Infibeam prices are not close to the grey market and its looks like they are with warranty.

If you buy from grey market Sony will only do a paid service.

By tiny I meant 46". Wait till few lucky ones with deep pockets buy it and start complaining. Then starts the panic mode.

Anyways, for a such a price the display should be "flawless".

I can't imagine a "flawless" LED LCD TV EVER!

Infact, I prefer CCFL backlit top end models like 46C750 much more than these "Full/Edge" LED backlit models for one basic reason - they cant match the 6500k consistent backlighting even on a Full LED model as they will have LEDs blinking behind them instead of a SINGLE consistent CCFL!

Only OLEDs can be flawless if they get "flawless" video processors. Next come Plasmas ONLY. I believe even a Samsung 51D550 can beat this "tiny" 46" "Full LED" TV in terms of calibrated PQ at about 1/4th of the price! :)

Good luck finding a flawless tv.

Which will never be out there :) My search for it ended last year when I got the PK550 and soon realized that every display has its pros and cons. It depends which ones can be lived with and others that are frustrating.

I like the D7000, D6600, LW5700, LW6500. Sony didn't excite me as much as in the past but maybe I need another demo. Sadly Samsung India hasn't launched C650, C750 equivalents this year (possibly replaced by D6000 series altogether).

Any series you liked in particular?

No tv is flawless that includes the plasma and OLED.
OLED tv still has issues with life.Since there aren't any large size OLED tv for regular consumer market,we still don't know of the any other problems.

The led don't blink and there is no single CCFL lcd, there actually many CCFL in a lcd, just like a CFL or a tubelight they can after a while become black in one corner.
LED does blink if the tv as a motionflow based on scanning backlight and apart from the luminance drop there is not much of a difference, the motion resolution is actually increased without much effect on input lag.

LED emitters come with different colors cold, warm 6500k,5500k and so on.

As far as the comparision of 51D550 to a flagship 46" HX92x.

Chad B for eg says that the HX92 is right there along with the kuro and that the 65" VT30 that he reviewed doesn't even come close to the HX92x.

Would appreciate if you first demo a calibrated HX925 before passing such a comment. There is NO plasma that beats the HX925 PQ, the pioneer kuro elite is the only other TV that equals the HX925 in terms of overall PQ, deepest blacks and brilliant motion and shadow detail. Mind you, this is the consensus among the owners that have owned both the Kuro Elite and HX920/3/5/9.

Didn't bother to check 3d but i liked D6xxx series as was the D5500 despite having a AA panel the contrast was actually quite good next to the last years samsung which had a SQ panel.
In the Sony the EX720 was really good along with the cheaper EX520.
These tvs Sony and samsung are really that close,if it wasn't for the panel lottery, the cheaper samsung would be the obvious choice if one is buying from a showroom.
