Samsung confirms OLED-TV launch at CES 2012

Bless the lords !! Launch of OLED also means that they will phase out lcd's and bring down the price of led's considerably and make oled their high end !!

But only one worry is that OLED's are more prone to burn in than even plasma tv's. But oled's also provide perfect 3D picture with active shutter.

Where did you find OLEDs are prone to burn-in? I am using AMOLED screens since past almost 18 months and there is no sign of a burn-in and definitely no IR like Plasma.

The only problems with OLEDs are that the blue emitor has way too less life than the red and green. This makes the overall picture more yellower as time passes.

All recent research were focussed on making blue life longer.

Should wait till the third generation until plunging.

Yes that is the only major issue of OLEDs. In mobile devices, its not really an issue as I never had any yellow looking picture on my SGS1. However, they seems to have messed something on SGS2 which has yellow tint on the left side of the screen and blue tint on the right :(. Samsung should improve the blue LED lifetime on the OLED TV offerings in January.

Both the wiki pages state that burn in is possible in oled. But this fact is not fully known because there are still very few oled screens and different companies use different versions of the technologies bases on their own customizations. But a few people have reported burn in on their samoled screens is what i found on the net. here is a couple of links http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/280935-screen-burn-galaxy-s2.html

But what i am assuming is that the years of research and the millions spent by samsung, sony and lg on oled tv's will ensure they must have eliminated the burn in issue.

So we just have to keep our fingers crossed and wait for CES 2012.

But one thing that gets me real excited is that after oled comes to the high end market, plasma and leds will get real cheap and will be a real boon to markets like india. By this time next year i think a 50inch 3d plasma or a 40 inch 3d led will be available for 35-40k.

I agree on the pricing front. Infact I expect a 55" 3D OLED to be available next year for around 2Lac only (if not less!). OLED panels are actually cheapest to manufacturer as compared to any other display technology to date (CRT was most expensive).

Talking of burn-in - I would stick to my study that its not an issue on OLED screens! Infact those reports are actually related to dye and LED getting damaged and hence an example of genuine panel defect which will be covered under warranty. Remember - no phone manufacturer claims that their OLED displays are susceptible to such phenomenon and that they would not cover such issues under warranty (like plasmas). Burn-in is an issue with phosphor based displays - CRT and Plasma and doesn't exist on any other form of technology.

People even claim burn-in on LCD TVs which is not at all possible as LCDs are essentially static image displays which are now used for Video and moving picture contents. Same applies to LEDs. Only thing which can happen to LEDs will be premature ageing of few pixels giving an impression of burn-in if those pixels are used more often than others (again, am talking of usage and not continuous usage!).

I am one of those who has a LCD TV with burn in as proof that it is very much possible. I too was under the impression that it cannot happen but seeing is believing and the Philips LCD TV in mom's bedroom definitely did develop a burn in.

That is what I am trying to say buddy that burn-in as we see on Plasmas and CRTs are altogether different thing than what we see on a DAMAGED LCD TV which has got some ghost images itched in. It typically do not happen when we show a static image but happen due to damaged LCD PANEL. Such issue can happen on any display including OLED, but are not related to showing static image for a long time (unless it damages the panel themselves). I know its bit confusing but even I have seen damaged LCD panels with ghost images, but they are not really same as Phosphor burn-in's.
