Firstly, does your tv get 5.1 from the source?
Are you playing 5.1 content from usb?

Friend forget about the decoding capabilities of the any Display as far as sound concern. No TV can't decode any 5 channels or 7 channels as of now. Connect the Hdmi into your avr and Hdmi out to TV, the avr will take care of everything.

TV can decode upto 5 channel information and play it in 2.0 mode...Samsung is one of the fewer TV in the market that can decode both if you don't have AVR...

Thanks for the info mate that's really cool. I still believe it can only pass through. So Do you think If we have AVR with Preout or a 5 Channel Amp, will the TV take care of the decoding? I don't think so.

I am confused with the specification.
dts 2.0+Digital Out
Yes (dts 2.0 Only)
I think it will only pass 2 channel audio through optical out to avr.

I have seen many posts wherein people have connected STB, TV and HT as follows:

STB ==> (HDMI) ==> TV (HDMI ARC where available)
TV ==> (Optical) ==> HT

I cannot ever fathom this wierd connection method.

  • The best method is:
    STB ==> (HDMI) ==> HT ==> (HDMI) ==> TV (HDMI ARC where available)
  • HDMI ARC returns the audio via the same cable but TV's optical out will be 2.0 channel only. The TV will decode 5.1/7.1 channel DD/DTS/D-THD/DTS-HD-MA/LPCM sound and convert it to 2.0 audio for its internal purpose. The same is output via headphone and optical, coaxial or other means.
  • Sometimes, the HT does not have HDMI-In/Out. In this case, use the signal from STB. The STB also has optical and/or coaxial out. Use this:
    STB ==> (HDMI) ==> TV
    STB ==> (Optical/Coaxial) ==> HT
  • If your HT does not have HDMI-In or Coaxial/Optical In, then you are simply out of luck. You will never be able to get 5.1 sound from DTH STB. Time for you to upgrade.

Guys, he just want to know if 5.1 DTS or Dolby Digital passthrough is possible through the TV's optical out or are they down mixed to 2.0. It is useful when playing movies from the USB port. He owns his avr for more than an year and I'm pretty sure he knows how to make the connections work.

Ah. Now I can understand the issue.
So a dolby/dts 5.1 encoded file on the usb has to be bitstreamed via optical by the tv.
If the tv can bitstream audio, I cant understand why it is only limited to 2.0, as it should just consider the sound as raw bytes and transfer it over optical without interpreting it as 5.1 or 2.0.

my all friends I have planned to buy samsung 40e5000.
So I dont want to take risk.thats all.
I just want to know can the eg5000 bitstream 5.1 dts and dolby digital formats to avr. thats all.

usb or hard disk to led (with 5.1 audio dts or dolby digital)>optical out>avr(decoding through avr)
