Samsung PS51E550 Owners' Thread - First impressions, Reviews, Issues, etc.

Do you notice this problem with some other source, e.g., USB movie? You must have got the 3D BDP with the TV with a free BD. Have you tried with it?

I did not try with USB then. However, I'm keeping a close eye on the screen. I'm going to try other sources if the problem re-occurs.

As far as 3D BDP is concerned, I'm yet to receive it. I've sent a mail to Samsung customer care today asking about the BDP.

Where do you live in Pune? Maybe we can collborate. If feasible I can give you some 3D movies to test. Send me a PM.

Hmmmm. Set the mode to movie and make the settings to default. Then make sure there are no external light sources in the room and then play 3d check if there is any flicker. If there is flicker then there is problem with the panel and otherwise there isn't...

Checked the display with 3D video as you recommended. No brightness flicker. At least not discernible to my eyes.

But still the question remains:Why should the panel flicker when cell light is set to 20 in any mode?Is it one of those "harmless imperfections"??

Today, visited Nandilath GMart Kollam for Panasonic 50UT50. Asked about 51E550 and got a quote of 68k without any bargain, so expecting to bargain in down to 66k.

Got 71k for 50UT50, also without any bargaining and hence, most probably would be going for that owing to the 3year warranty for a mere 3k difference.

Both sets were not available for demo as it is risky for them with almost nil plasma sales.

Also, has anyone compared the 3D of 51E550 with Sammy Series 6 LED?? I saw the LED and 3D was quite impressive with the demo content. But , this being an entry level plasma, am sceptical of the effectiveness of the 3D. Plz advice on the same.

Imrahn

My D550 died on the 11th month and got the E550 as replacement. I have now used it for 2 weeks. I use Airtel HD and Samsung 6700 Series BDP (US model) for content.

As an ex-owner of D550, I did not find much improvement in the E550, not withstanding the Real Black Filter. TelevisionInfo, however, has better ratings and reviews on the blacks and performance compared to D550. May be not perceivable to my eyes.

Remote is slimmer and thinner. Main addition is the button for Smart Hub. Old remote works well with E550. Remote response is a bit slower, I think.

The "On TV" controls are a little better than D550. The on-off button is a real multi function button under the screen than on the bezel. Even if the remote is not there, I can at least change the source and do other changes.

SmartHub is interesting and a definite plus compared to D550. It has 800MB space and it already occupied ~200 MB. Tried CrorePati and some other applications. Explore3D has some trailers and kiddy stuff. Thanks to the broadband connection, I did NOT venture into opening any of the trailers. It is far better than the SmartHub in the high end Samsung BD player I bought from US.

I thought sound was better than D550. Since the specs look the same, could be a perception.

Wifi is built in and is a huge Plus. Looks like it support WiFiDirect as well (didnt try). Havent tried the USB or BT keyboard.

Has Skype support. However, need a decent internet connection and skype camera (Rs. 6000 as per site).

Sugarsync Cloud storage option is good ; if we have a decent unlimited internet connection.

Tried native 3D and 2D to 3D conversion Found it to be similar to D550. Played from BD and from rip (Side By Side). Got 2 pairs of 3D glasses. New glass is light. The earlier glasses also worked with E550. I preferred the earlier version since the new ones were not stable on my nose (the moment you tilt your face, it was moving). Further, sides are completely open and the chances for light/reflection to enter through the sides were more. Didnt observe any cross talks with either set of glasses. I can now start a theater - thanks to 6 glasses!

Same is the case with AllShare and Samsung Android Remote App. Nothing new and not much difference in the remote or in streaming.

USB playback: USBs are on the side (as earlier) and convenient to access. Tried some formats. It played most of them (didnt play few WMV and FLV files)

Supposed to have ARC. Havent tried yet.

2 Major negatives for me :

1. Has 1 less HDMI (that too in the back). Since DTH and BDP has HDMI, I now cannot connect both using the HDMI ports in the back like I used to. Since I have cabled using the duct, it would have looked odd to have one HDMI connected to the side and I have now gone down to Component for BDP (creates problem for some 3D Blurays and I have to switch the HDMI from DTH).

2. It also lost the VGA port. While my laptops has HDMI ports, I will now have to invest in a new graphics card or a DVI adapter for my desktop. If you are a laptop user and do not have a HDMI port, beware.

Its like driving your car to the max !! However good your car might be there is always a limit over which it is not very comfortable to go :) .Same way it works for the tv :ohyeah:

Anyway use these settings. They will get you the best 2D and 3D for your E550 :)

Calibrated Picture Settings for 51D550 & 51E550 :
Picture Mode: Movie
Cell Light :18
Contrast :90
Brightness :52
Sharpness :15
Color :50
White Balance
--------------
R-Offset :26
G-Offset :24
B-Offset :26
R-Gain :30
G-Gain :20
B-Gain :29
---------------
Color Tone :warm2
Film Mode :Auto1
Color Space:Auto
And dont forget to name the HDMI source as PC or DVI , this will always get you the best color output. Also i suggest using these settings only after the initial break-in period.

Scrolling gradients were super smooth in the beginning. Now there is a jitter/lag at regular intervals of shifting blacks and whites. There was no Image Retention to begin with. Now there is, even from the AllShare menu. Turn on the TV in absolute darkness and you will notice that even SMARTv log lingers on for some time. This is a new development. It goes off though.

On the other hand, movement, picture quality and transition. Nothing beats this TV. I have been noticing LEDs and Plasmas even after buying E550. No comparison. A Hathway STB gives me almost the same performance as DVD/BD on other TVs. All that from a 6-7 feet distance.

When I viewed pictures from a pen drive , the pictures took 2-3 seconds to load each of them, like it started from top of the picture and filled till bottom .

Where as when I saw the same on panny XT50 ot UT50 , it read instantly and there was no lag .

Pardon. My mistake.

Manufacturers are slowly doing away with redundant ports to save costs. It is being assumed that all owners of BDP will have a HD-TV automatically. Hence composite AV, component V, etc. are being done away with.

Sony BDP is still providing most outputs: HDMI, Component Video, Composite AV, Optical, Coaxial digital.

Just4Kix, in my view, it was unpardonable for Samsung to remove one HDMI port from 51E550 :-(

Not a big problem for me though, as I have a Yamaha AV receiver which has 3 input HDMI ports.

May be, given the quality of the built in speakers, they have started assuming that we'll buy AV receivers as well. ;-)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
