Hi Friends,

I have ordered Yamaha RX-V465 and will get it this weekend. :licklips:

Now as I have already ordered it, I have few questions/doubts here for the connections.

I am a proud owner of a 2 years old Onida DVD player which plays all kind of DVD, be it Original/duplicate or written using applications. So I am not yet decided to change it in recent future.
And the doubt is, it seems that I have to use a Coaxial cable to connect my DVD player to the AVR. Is that OK?

If the Ans is YES, then how much that kind of cable cost? I searched ebay and I found only one seller selling them at a price of Rs. 450-550... If I found that cable in SP Road here in Bangalore, would that quality be good, or there are good brands available? Where I can get those branded cables?

Also, when I gone through Yamaha RX-V465 product documentation downloaded from there web side, I got to know that there is an option to connect Surround Back rear speakers(that means 7.1 capability) but that have to be through an external AMP. Now what kind of Amp we are talking about here? Also why then it was mentioned as 5.1? Just because I need an external AMP for that?

Can wharfedale 8.1/9.0 bookshelf speakers be used as rear later if I opted for Towers in future as Fronts?

I have gone through the cabling section of this forum and end result is everything is out of reach for me. :-(
For the time being I would be connecting only two bookshelf to my AVR and I think I need 6-7 mt of cable in total.

Get that cable from some local electronics pats store. Cost would be 200 - 300.

Its a digital cable, so either it works or it does not. It would not impact signal quality.

You mean the Coaxial digital cable for the audio?. It should be fine. Infact
some recommend coaxial digital over optical. I think the recommended
coaxial is 75 ohm digital cable. Just search and confirm.

I dont know if 465 is 7.1 or multizone capable. Inorder to connect to an
external AMP, the 465 should have pre-outs. If it does have then connect
the pre-out from 465 to the external AMP.

Technically you can but it all depends on whether the 465 can drive
the towers (enough power). I think it depends on the towers which
is in question. From what I read it depends on the speaker sensitivity
and required power range. The greater the sensitivity, I think it is better.

Please look up http://www.hifivision.com/audio-video-cables/2608-avr-connectivity.html for connection details.

Coaxial is a name for a general format cable. What is more important is the connection type - such as composite, component, digital, HDMI etc.

If you are talking about using coaxial cable and a component connection, that was the popular format before HDMI became a standard. If you are talking about coaxial digital, it can carry full 5.1 signals. But you also need to connec component or composite for video.

You have to look for a branded cable. At the economy level, the brands to look for are Bandridge and MX.

What this means is that the AVR can internally understand and process 7.1 signals but there are amplifiers for only 5 channels. The rear channels will be output through what is called a pre-out. You connect an external amp to amplify these signals.

Cheers

Exactly, I got an optical cable for 200 bucks from ebay, works like a charm. But I did change my speaker cables to Bandrige, thought it might make a difference.

Thanks all for replying to my post.

Now here are few more questions.

1. I have gone through the cables section of this forums and found that Amarbir[Lynx-India] is the distributor for MX cables in India. Shall I order it from him only or there are shops in Bangalore where I can purchase?

2. Regarding my DVD-AVR connection. YES. I was referring to Composite Coaxial Cable. Kindly check the below link and let me know if this the correct one.

eBay India: Digital Coaxial Audio Cable - S/PDIF Dolby Digital 1.5m (item 360300297387 end time 25-Sep-2010 19:30:00 IST)

Also if the price is fine?

I suggest to NOT buy over ebay without knowing the quality and also have no options for returns in case that does not match your needs. SJ road has tons of shops to pick up a digital coax cable. This will take care of audio only.

For video connections from your DVD player, I suggest use a component connection if you have the option. Please review venkats reference for what this looks like.

If you are still confused after all this, get a friend who is knowledgable about HT and make a round of purchases. It will provide you the options for exchanging likewise.

If you dont have someone else, I will be in Bangalore on Oct 2nd and you can PM me so I can help you buying the stuff.

I am feeling low as the leader called me today to inform that the product would reach Bangalore only on Monday, due to some courier issue.

He told that he is getting the AVR from Delhi. Is the price cheaper there?

Friends,

Again I need your help. I am bit struck with my budget which I had set aside for my wharfe's. But due to some urgent requirement, I am left with only 6-7K.

Is it possible to get any speaker which can give me reasonable sound and also which I may use as rear later, if possible?

How about Indian brand? If I can get something good at this price, then may be after 3-4 months I can go for a Tower as fronts.

Please Audio Gurus, help this new kid.. :o

For the budget you are considering I would simply wait for the 3-4 months before getting the speakers. All brands will still be available even then. Otherwise I have a suspicion your money will not be put to good use. If you really really need to buy speakers at that price, your only option is used and you may want to look into the classified section or post a wanted ad in that section.

Leave the emotions aside for a moment before making the decision! 7K can be put to use for other things than some crappy speakers.

Tapas see some demo pieces of Cambridge audio S30 bookshelves. In your freetime visit the local dealers and check all the demo bookshelf speakers they have ..... You might get lucky... Dont loose heart........ Use the time to audition 3 months is not long as said by marsilians instead of buying something for price buy what you like ...:)

Thanks Kittu,

I have called Audio Planet in Koramongla here. They are the distributor for CA in Bangalore. I am going there on Wednesday for a demo.

Will share my experience.

If any one interested in Yamaha RX-V465, they can contact Music Ranch, Jayanagar in Bangalore. I have conformed with Mukesh. He can get it for you. I have called many other Music shops here in Bangalore but it seems that only they can arrange it somehow.

I am still waiting to get mine. :-)
