Shield pro vs Zidoo media player

Came right through without custom charges but like all imports you may or may not face additional charges depending on your luck
lmk how it turns out if you install core elec on it, I would have grabbed one too but I am working outside hole and no one apart from me would touch that thing

Been using it since the coreelec forum post.Have been using coreelec based devices in forever now.More than happy to answer here on in Dm if you have any questions.

But just a quick summary of my experience though this is not the thread for it

-Fast and slick once configured
-configuration can seem complex if you aren’t familiar with kodi or coreelec but it’s not that hard to grasp
-purely for remuxed copies and not for streaming apps
-Kodi interface is fine with me when configured as per my preferences but I can see why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s kodi that makes it like a building blocks where you can tailor it to your needs
-I have a uhd friendly bluray drive attached to it(keys can be updated via findvuk for direct playback),a hdd and plex server
-not for people who want menu support as menus are hit and miss and given it’s java based it’s dead in terms of development
-supports 3d mvc but I use it on an a95l and Bravia 9 so haven’t personally tested it
-passthrough of all formats
-no av1(doesn’t bother me as there’s no bluray that will be in av1)
-vc1 has to be software accelerated due to a bug
-player led/edid block options for those with Samsung displays/projector setups without dv support
-seen some commotion over how it will not be supported into the future releases of coreelec as future kernels don’t have the dovi.ko module necessary for it but it already does everything I need from a media player at this point.plus Sony/oppo bluray players which are considered the gold standard are age old now
-Also seen a few who say fel doesn’t matter but it does make a difference.A few YouTube channels cover it but while you can’t see the difference right on YouTube they usually have links to hi res images images showcasing the difference. In my personal opinion when you are chasing AV perfection as an enthusiast and it’s more accurate to the creator’s intent it’s worth it.
-the community at coreelec are pretty friendly and helpful but with the surge in new users not raising right complaints without logs, demanding more from a free to use platform, etc it might come out rude but they look into every problem reported right if it can be fixed.(except for piracy related queries that is)

I'll take you up on that if I do get around to ordering one, right now its just my parents, who dont give a shit about movie quality lol. I really hope, proper DV compatibility picks up in the future, so many OEMs just half bake it into their media players and call it a day but dolby itself is a pain and doesnt reveal much info about DV decoding from what I've heard.

OEMs can't really do that or we would have a retail solution right now. There's a reason it didn't happen so long. The thing is FEL is a format for bluray discs. So unless its a bluray player playing the media it is a grey area(if you own the disc, else its piracy and not so grey) as its a copy of the disc media which manufacturers. It's the same deal with lossless audio(TVs have lossless audio passthrough but only for the an external device source as no internal streaming app has lossless audio).

However MINIX has stated it's looking into it for their box and is lobbying with Dolby for the same I believe but I have no idea how that will turn out.

As for the budget related woes you can pick up the homatics r4k plus or take a gamble with the kinhank g1 on Alibaba which is also subject to luck for customs. With the right coupons and luck you might be able to wrap up the g1 for 5k or homatics for 8k.You'll loose out on vc1 playback as its not powerful enough to decode via software but you gain av1 and streaming licenses are on it.Kinhank depending on the internal revision you get you may be capped at 100mbps via ethernet if you use it for nas/plex.Also coreelec can't be installed on the eMMC so its a tad slower on that front as well. The other kink is if you use a bluetooth remote you have to repair between both OS when you switch or have separate remotes for both but I would highly suggest keeping it as only a device for remuxes and keep streaming apps to inbuilt tv or an Apple TV/fire vt/whatever your preferences are for it.

I chuckled a bit when I read the post because know the feeling though but you'll get through where you'll have the means and the ability to seek some of your obsessions someday.

yeah, thats what I've heard, Dolby's not giving out licenses except for major bluray players, so all of the work till now has mostly been guesswork, CoreElec have been the first ones to actually play dolby without issues

I can get the UGoos, its just, I'll barely get to use for the next couple of years, and by then something else would have come up for sure.

That's because they stumbled on a dovi.ko that could allow the same which seems to be disabled in future iterations for other devices so they could patch it in.Also worth noting they aren't actually the first. The ugoos did decode fel even on the android side which traces back to some forums and YouTube posts.Coreelec was the first to do dual track DV.Where the fel is a separate 1080p video stream.

Until blu-ray standards get changed this will work. It's when blu-ray adopts standards for 8k it will change.Still worth having a playback device to handle older formats.

For example
-our regional older blurays have a LPCM audio track as the only uncompressed track. The new am logic chipsets can't handle lpcm.
-3d is considered dead and not enabled in any other device again

also since these are amlogic socs there's a lot of other things you could use the device for later.Theres a openwrt project it could be modified for,etc

Also talking about 8k, it isn't reality at least in the next few years.A frame would be 33 mp or more based on aspect ratio, the bandwidth and storage for it isn't feasible. Also the lack of content in 8k.Plus we all can see how AV1 is going. It was touted to have higher quality bitrate using the same bandwidth. However streaming services used it to cut server usages giving us the same quality.

Maybe possible for the next dream chase a strato v or a qube home solution/AI upscaling solutions comparable to DLSS

Tech does often surprise you and I could be all wrong.

Nvidia has released their uscaling solution for browser videos, and it does work decently ngl, but yeah 8k is a dream for now, until we achieve a breakthrough, even leaving storage/bandwidth aside, even producing a native 8k video requires a lot of processing which is cost prohibitive, its not just doubling the res but quadrupling the number of pixels

I got a Dune HD homatics r 4k plus last month primarily for usage with RD - and then as it turns out, A new app called Vidi for Apple TV added support for this making the purchase entirely redundant 🙃

Nonetheless, In my month or so of usage, I found it to a much more capable box than the shield pro.
It handles HDR/DV switching and passthrough of DTS HD OOB without fuss but had issues with 24p switching and DTS:X

After upgrading it to android 12 though, everything seems to work as expected.
OTT on Netflix/ Prime etc works as expected with atmos passthrough , DV/HDR switching and 24p frame rate matching.
Local file playback is excellent with True HD , DTS: X etc all working (passthrough) as expected

UI navigation is much fast and lag free vs the shield pro although not as fluid as the ATV (that would have been an unfair expectation to begin with though)
Happy to run any specific tests any of you may want

Does it play DV FEL? I am using a fire stick 4k for Kodi, and the following works.
  • TrueHD Atmos
  • DTS-X
  • DTS HD-MA (only 5.1)
  • HDR
  • DV
  • 24fps
Just that DV FEL doesn't work. Can you test using these samples? Do check the readme for information.

i have been using it largely for stremio.
If you can tell me which specific file to test from there ..and what to look for then i'd be happy to check
