Dear Friends,

I am buying the Sherbourn 5 Channel 200 watt Amp

PA 5-200 5-Channel Amplifier | Sherbourn Technologies

through my friend in USA. The weight seems to be around 71 lbs, which is almost 33 KG.

Please guide me the best way to bring it to India.

a. I may need to pay for the extra weight, I can pay for it, no issues ( as still its worth )

b. Will customs ask for something ?

c. What else should I take care ???

Expert friends, please share your ideas....:)

You will have to pay your friend towards excess baggage for sure. Airlines charge 350-500 Rs. per kilo above permissible limit.
Besides that ask you're friend to carry original bill for customs though that is not really anything to worry about unless he is carrying more items (electronics etc) with him.
Anyways max they will ask for is 2-3k for the amp.

What is the mode you are prefering to bring itto India?

1. Through your friend - then you have to pay extra baggage, in case he fly's by Emirates he can book 1 additional baggage up to 32 kgs till24 hrs before departure it is very economical. Other carriers also might have some scheme.

2. After landing it is purely your luck. Incase it is attracted by the authorities then they will charge you 37% of duty on the whole on the landing cost after the free carriage limit of Rs. 35K. Otherwise it is a song. (This point has already been discussed here in eloborate you can search and read).

3. In case you are getting it by courier then it will necessarily pass through customs and afore said rate is applicable.

Thanks for your replies...

Can I show it as a used one, will that save me from some issues ?? or is it ok to bring it as it is delivered to my friend ?

Please be aware importing used electronics is banned in India. Ofcoure you can bring it as personal possesion. So never ever declare it as used if you are importing it. Customs authorities are nice and cooperative. Don't try to out smart them, simle polite request makes wonders than being smarter.

is that at 230V or 120 rating ?.If 120 , with this power using a stepdown transformer is really not worth it as you will suffer a sound quality degrade.

This is a very valid point. Most of us view customs officials as cheats and money swindlers. There are stories how they let anything pass if they are gifted bottles of liquor. Of course, all this is pure folklore and bollywood masala. In reality, they are quite co-operative but get very tough the moment they realize one is trying to outsmart them. Be honest with them. I have never had any trouble with customs (I always dress well and wear a blazer while flying the gulf flights, the only way out of Trivandrum, to global destination). This helps me stand out from the usual working class mallu guys who pack these flights. I have always got special treatment at customs and was checked only once (while carrying stock of Glen Fiditch).

This brand has options (120v/230v) (user selectable) for voltage requirements...:)

Getting through courier is not recommended as you will end up paying full customs and freight. In that case the total cost will be almost similar to buying in India with out the advantage of Warranty.

Carrying along is the best way. Sending through courier will cost you a lot. Like every one said, if you are lucky then you may escape without paying any customs-duty, however be prepared for the worst. Extra baggage, if weighs within the limit will cost you $120 app. But if the baggage weighs more then some airlines may charge you twice for every 4lbs. Ask your friend to inquire with the airlines prior to the boarding date to avoid any hassle.

I always land in full formals. Especially when i used to carry high end or high value stuff. It gives us an edge and a point of view that it is for our own use and we are not traders. Seldom i have been stopped by the authorities and i always got thru the green channel.

BTW is this amp in topic is really worth the pain and price???

Max weight with most airlines for overweight stuff is 70lbs, you should recheck with the airline on their website, so that you don't have a problem after buying it. I think it is as much an airlines issue as a baggage handling issue at the airport.

Would watch this thread with a lot of interest, need to ship a XPA5 which had already been bought. Hoping to figure out a cost effective means to ship it home to India. Any pointers in toss regard would be extremely welcome.

Well, it would be through my friend, whoz coming to India...

Well, I started liking Emotiva/Sherbourn. Bottomline for this Amp is: Great value for the money.

I guess, it's worth.

I have one PTM 6150 of ADA with me to let go and i sent you a PM on this.
