I'm planning to buy a 40" or 46" flat screen TV (LED / LCD). I was quite confused about Sony's product line up.

[1] Well, the website says "BRAVIA LCD TV - EX710 Series", but Sony advertises them as "Edge LED". Can experts here help me understand what this Edge LED means? Is it real LED TV or some marketing spoof?

[2] Also, what's the equivalent of Sony's EX710 series LED TVs in Samsung? Which is a better buy - Sony or Samsung, interms of quality of TV, user experience, customer care and cost of ownership?

best regards
- Anand

First of all, all TVs commercially being sold in India as LED TVs are LCD TVs that use LEDs for back lighting instead of CCFL or Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lights. This is done to achieve mainly two objectives, one to reduce thickness and weight of the TV and two, to reduce the power consumption of the TV.
In the edge LED TV, the LED or light emitting diods are not placed behind the entire panel of the TV but just at the edges only. The light from the edges is dispersed on the entire screen using some type of light guides like optical fibre. Further reduction of thickness of the TV has become possible due to this technique.
Other and the most advanced type of "LED" TV is Full LED with local dimming. The LEDs are placed on the entire back panel but with an arrangement for dimming or completely switching off of the LEDs in the zone (locally) where the scene is dark, hence called LCD back lit with local dimming. Better contrast is achieved through this technique.
The companies are enjoying a good premium on this type of TVs.

Just to add the term "LED tv" was started by samsung, who were also the first to use those inscane contrast ratio numbers.
All LED tvs are nothing but lcds with a LED backlight or Edge light.

The equivalent samsung model is the C6xxx,both have good PQ,only thing is the samsung panel lottery.

Does the Sony EX710 in 55inches have 1080 Lines as motion picture resolution? Can someone confirm this???

Motion resolution is LCDs typically is 300 lines. When interpolated (100/200Hz)it could come close to 600-750 lines.

With today's technology, nothing more than this is possible.

If you want 1080p moving picture resolution, get a plasma.

Having said that, the moving picture resolution is hardly a real life consern in non-fast moving scenes.

The Sony Z450A and 46X450A cracked the 1080lines motion barrier in 2008,while thats good for marketing ,in reality its doesn't make much of a difference.

Well is it worth, only you have the answer. The prices of flat panels tvs will fall.
Lcds still are expensive at anything over 46" regardless of the make.
The EX710 is a no nonse tv,its performance is pretty good, with low power consumption.

I looked at the EX710 yesterday - well, I must admit that it's really a stunner. It's really awesome. I still have to look at Samsung C6900 yet - BUT I think I'm already very biased with Sony. Will post after I look at Samsung!

It'll be interesting to hear about your experience between the EX710 & the Samsung 55C6900.

What kind of pricing are we talking here between these 2 models?

I have to decide between the three LEDs - Sony EX710(46 inch ---99,900 Rs) vs LG LE5500 (47 inch ---94,990 Rs) vs Samsung C5000 (46 inch ---1,15,000 Rs). Experts please help...
Is EDGE LED enough or should i go for the "full LED" model of LG(8500 --- Rs 1,60,000)
(The sony showroom guy was saying the LG people are lying, and the full LED is actually not full LED ?)
should i pump in a little bit more and go for a 3D ?
whrere can i read present users opinions ?
Thanks

Well all are good choices. The sony showroom guys probably meant its a lcd, since Sony never advertised their lcds as LED tv which was started by samsung.

Lg8500 is good if you can afford it.Its LED backlighting isn't as good as the older LH90.
But the cheaper HX800 will be a better buy with all the freebies.

The 46" version of EX710 comes with a AMVA panel,so it won't show as deep blacks as the 40" and 55" versions which have the SPVA.
The samsung C5000 can come with either a AMVA panel or the SPVA panel. No way of knowing it until its removed from the box.
But all will still have better contrast then the LG LE5500.

Whatever you are buying,do consider SONY seriously in your wish list. All the best and take your own sweet time doing the research so as to what suits you.
You know what, after certain criteria are met-the kind of features you looking for is solely dependent on the buyer himself rather than the price tag/features.

In your case you must find out how much more you wish to shell for particular technology.

In a nutshell, your personal choices and preference takes over all the advices given to you.

That's my experience, because in the end even all the users for example in this forum if by chance advice you not to go for LED but conventional LCD,one would still buy an LED if it suits the budget.

Alright my wait is over. I brought home a 46" EX710 today. I did look at Samsung 46" C6900, it looked great as well, but from a cost perspective, Sony was much more VFM than Samsung I thought (Rs.1,15,000). EX710 cost me Rs.93,000 (with a Sony wireless headphone free). I thought it was a decent deal.

And the beast rocks. :yahoo:

I'm yet to explore / play with the settings.

Thank you everyone for your advice and support!!
