Sony SR760HP region free ?

Hi everybody !

I am new here, so think maybe a very basic question..I have inherited a ton load of UK DVD's (region 2, I think) and my Sony player SR760HP has Region 5 written behind it.

The Sony technician says that my UK discs cant play & the board needs to be changed, even a hack wont work...

Is this true?
