Ok so it seems that this player is capable of flawless mkv playback..:yahoo:

Does any one have the player and check it out thoroughly.?

1) Does it support ntfs? or any other file system not limited by file size (atleast till 20gb:) )

2) Does it decode rips with dts-hd ma and dolby true HD?

3) Can it decode dts hd ma and dolby true Hd, and output it via the optical port? Will such high bitrate out put be decoded by Phillips and lg HTIB's?

4) Is the mkv playback hassle free?

5) Is there a way to make the player's bluray region free?

6) How goos is its internet compatibility, like playing youtube videos etc?

7) how is the picture quality of the mkv playback?

8) Does it play the bluray files its m2ts via usb?

I've seen the player in action for blueray disk playback but not for mkv..

Please do discuss the above points,
If it does all the above flawlessly, its the next best thing after wdtv :yahoo:

EDIT:- Whatever files you test it with
1) mention the size of the file, file type, and display resolution, audio type and audio video bitrate..
2) And open in kmplayer and see the media info and paste it here in a quote tag.. Will help a lot.. Thanks!!

I went with the sample of the 1080p nhanc3 rip of transformers and it worked flawlessly..no issues..
Then came Hurt Locker..2.79gb rip, again flawless..

Just needed to plugin the pendrive and select usb..
it fastforword and rewind worked easily..

The fat32 file size limit is a PITA :@

Yep the FAT32 limit is PITA even in cameras where one can't record a continuous video clip for more then 4gb .

Can you share the video bitrate and exact resolution for these files.....

WMV Files - Plays perfectly if the WMA soundtrack consists of two channels. DOES NOT play the audio if the WMA track is of 6 (5.1) channels.

Does not play the video portion of some HD files with the .MP4 extension.

I have a 1080P Pirates Of The Caribbean trailer that produced only sound when played. Details of the file are as follows:

Does any one have the player and check it out thoroughly.?

1) Does it support ntfs? or any other file system not limited by file size (atleast till 20gb:) ) --- WIll check this weekend.. unlikely from the USB. from the network -- will require a firmware upgrade said to be fcoming july

2) Does it decode rips with dts-hd ma and dolby true HD? Mkv - t-HD yes

3) Can it decode dts hd ma and dolby true Hd, and output it via the optical port? Will such high bitrate out put be decoded by Phillips and lg HTIB's? -- yes - the core stream is output - spdif specs do not allow a bitrate of more than 1.5Mbps

4) Is the mkv playback hassle free? - in my limited experience, yes - challenge to get it off the network still

5) Is there a way to make the player's bluray region free? not known yet - if youd find any way - do post

6) How goos is its internet compatibility, like playing youtube videos etc? - average - but firmware upgrades have been promised

7) how is the picture quality of the mkv playback? - from USB - it's okay - but i got the (highly subjective) feeling that BD quality is better - but need to do an a/b to confirm

8) Does it play the bluray files its m2ts via usb? - said to, not checked.. figured if it plays mkvs, it definitely play these.

I've seen the player in action for blueray disk playback but not for mkv..

Please do discuss the above points,
If it does all the above flawlessly, its the next best thing after wdtv :yahoo: --- it's not - for getting stuff off the network it's currently nowhere in the same league. if the promised firmware upgrade gives the functionality, it'll still be unlikely to have the bells and whistles of NMT.

1) mention the size of the file, file type, and display resolution, audio type and audio video bitrate..

hi - i have given the replies within your quotes itself. my belief is that once (and if) the promised upgrade delivers full network functionality, it could be substitute, but I doubt it will ever have the visual slickness of an HTPC interface (mymovies etc) or a good NMT interface.

This file not playing is no surprise, the format profile is [email protected], did you try playing the same file in any of the media player????. Ok find a file with Profile [email protected] or lesser and same reference frame....and try again and report .....

This is the main file which i didnt take, but the previous file is a sample from this.

Strange the sample has a different specifications than the original, Also the bitrate for video is missing for the sample file (not the overall bitrate but video). Also there is no Audio bitrate for both the files ....
Can you use media info to get the details .... media info is more accurate and detailed in these matters

Here you go...seems like the same info to me..

So in the Sony S370, if I am playing a MKV file from a HDD connected to the USB, what will be outputed on the Optical (the original audio stream which may be compressed DTS, DD or lossless DTS-MA, DD-THD as the case maybe) or decoded into 7.1, 5.1 LPCM ? Basically I am trying to figure out if the Sony BDP will do the audio processing or it will do a passthru of the audio and let the AVR do it.

similarly what sort of Audion stream will go in the HDMI output in this case (i.e. playing MKV file with DTS,DD, or HD DTS, DD track)
thanks for the info

^Thats precisely wat i want to find out, if it does, its the cheapest decoder available for hd sound \m/

Only someone who has the player can experiment so much and tell, not possible at a shop...:(

Weather the player, decodes or does passthrough can be found out in the player settings itself. I think this one does decodes. Also if its optical we are using the player cannot pass DTA MA or DD-THD. Optical cannot do HD audio.

hi sam9s
That helps.. so I can hook up Optical to a AVR but it would work in case of older Audio formats (ie non lossless). If I want to enjoy Blueray/MKV with the newer, lossless audio encoded, then I can do it only thru a HDMI connection carrying audio+video between BDP and AVR... and also in that case the AVR needs to support HDMI Repeater mode...

So a long termish investment strategy would imply buying a HTiB which has a HDMI Repeater AVR...

I seem to be settling for the Onkyo HTS3300.... the thing is not very commonly available in India though.. might just be worthwhile buying it in US thru online stores and getting it over to india.. apparently for items < 25K INR theres no customs...

If you want to buy Onkyo 3300 in NCR, please PM me, I know someone who has the stock and you can buy even today. :)

Unfortunately Sony S370 not support HDD (i bought for HDD support but) , only pendrive (8GB) or u have to burn MKV or AVi files on DVD (support DVD9 to) .

Did you format it to fat 32 or ntfs?
Try with fat 32, and when u plug it in, give it some time..

send me a list of what you want checked by pm or post here, and I'll try to check the rest of the week.
