Sony's BDP-S370- Usb play capabilities- Discussion

Can you please confirm if burning around 4.3GB (full DVD single layer) MKVs are read properly with rewind and forward? I would appreciate an update.

It does work. I have tried this multiple times.

Also, if someone could update on whether Sony could play MP3s across multiple folders as Samsung was restricted to play only a SINGLE FOLDER and even generating playlists beyond a folder would not work.

I am not sure how Samsung plays the MP3 files. however Sony plays only 1 folder at a time. I have not been able to find a way to create a playlist thought.. did not do much research on that in fact..

One way around to play files from multiple folders

lets say you have 3 folders F1, F2, F3 under the same directory. Now by default you can play files in only one of these as a playlist.

If you want to play files from all the folders F1, F2, F3 in sequence (all the MP3 files from the folder), keep one dummy MP3 file parallel to F1/F2/F3 in the directory structure and play this as your first file.

Once BDP finishes playing dummy file, it will jump to files under F1, play all of these.. will then jump to files under F2 and play all these and so on...

Cheers

Anyone tried out connecting an Ipod to the USB port of the Sony BDP S370 and playing music through it?

I went to a Showroom today and tried connecting my Hard Disk -- it did not work - after going through this Forum, I realized that is because the Hard Disk has been formatted in NTFS.

I also tried connecting my Ipod Touch to see whether I could play music through the S370. It did not recognize the device at all! I found that very surprising because the website talks about using an Ipod to control the S370.

I have recently bought an Amp and a pair of bookshelves. I know the sound will be better if I buy a CD player, but I am postponing this buy because a friend of mine who lives in Singapore told me that he will get a Marantz CD player for me at half the price - but he is not due to come to India for another five months and I am itching to use Amp and Speakers.

I anyway need a device to play movies, so I was wondering whether I could get a DVD player or a Blu-Ray player which will not only allow me to watch movies, but also play music from my Ipod or CDs -- I am presuming that the S370 can be connected to the Amp directly to play music, and to the TV (Samsung C530) using HDMI.

Did you try that? I don't think it will work as it will play music files within a folder only as you suggested and not inside other nested folders.

Can someone confirm if NTFS can be supported on this player after a firmware upgrade? Samsung could actually recognize multiple NTFS and FAT devices including HDDs (with parallel USB port connected to supply more current) through a USB hub without any issue!

When complained to Samsung regarding this crazy 1 folder only music playback, I was told by the product manager "Even Sony can not play". Seems Samsung is comparing itself with Sony to build their products. I never knew ANY mp3 players which has such limitation (including those Rs.1k chinese players and discmans/portable HDD players).

Hi All,

I have a question regarding this player.

When i play bluray disc, audio gets decoded in the player itself and i pass audio to AVR thru HDMI. I read somewhere in forum that AVR should be able to decode HD audio. Can anyone please explain me that. Why there's a need of decoding audio in AVR when i am getting decoded audio from player.

Thanks

I have a file named
"1000.Places.To.See.Brazil.DivX.AC3.mkv" of 2.15GB

However, I am unable to play the same on the S370 via USB.

The HDD contains other files also which play without any issues. The above file also plays perfectly on my computer.

Any suggestions on how to play the file?

I am assuming your AVR is 5.1 since most 7.1 have HD decoders.

You dont need an AVR to decode HD Audio if you are sending the signals to AVR through Analog 5.1 Out from BDP. If you pass the signals through HDMI, BDP will bypass internal decoders and send raw data to AVR for it to decode. So it wont work through HDMI. It will only work through Analog Connection. However, your AVR needs to have a 5.1 Analog In to do the same else it wont work.

You need to set your settings in BDP to Multiple Channel and connect your BDP Analog Out (HQ 6 Analog Cables Reqd.) to AVR's 5.1 Analog In of your AVR. You also need to set Surround Back in BDP as None so that those signals will be send to Side Surrounds.

In such case, AVR just acts a Power Amp and does not use Pre-Amp Section.

Hope this clarifies our doubts.

Earlier i was using 5.1 system. But now i am currently using 4.0 system and could not be much happier. My 4.0 sounds much better than 5.1.

Only reason is that 5.1 was thru an AVR and 4.0 is with the help of 2 Stereo Amps. One driving my 2 Fronts which goes down deep in Bass and another driving my Surrounds. In my DVDP, i have set Centre Speaker and Subwoofer to none so all vocals and LFE goes to front speakers. (Obviously i am using 4 Analog Cables to connect them to Stereo Amps and a HMDI cable to connect tto my LED)

Press audio button on the remote. It will cycle through all available audio tracks..

I have a BDP-S370. Nice player. Good high quality AV output. I would like to know whether it will support a SATA hard disk connected through a USB adapter. I am not talking about a portable USB hdd like Seagate Free Agent or something. I want to use a spare SATA hdd that I have in my PC. Single partition and FAT32 is known but are there some driver issues? Has anyone tried this before?

You can buy an HDD enclosure which will convert your HDD to an external USB HDD. However you should format the drive using FAT32 for the BDP to reciognise it. But this poses a problem - FAT partitions have a maximum partition size (I think it is 32GB) and you can't copy files larger than 4GB.

That's not correct. There are non-Microsoft software tools that will create and format a partition greater than 32 GB. Here's one such tool:

CompuApps SwissKnife V3 - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

The 4 GB file limit problem still remains, I think.
