Speakers for Onkyo SR508 Receiver

have u tried onkyo tall boy speakers...SKS-HT728... i heard its good and iam planning for it.

Yes, I have. However, according to numerous feedbacks from the forum members, the onkyo speakers are not that great. Before jumping into the BUY mode...:). I wanted some recommendations to try out so that we have a great buy.

Do you live in NCR? We can club the purchase and bargain for good discount. If the answer is NO, can you share your price quote?

I too agree with Kittu

Instead of buying 7.1 speakers or 5.1 speakers for 45k, you may go for good Tower or Bookshelf speakers first. Later on you can add Subwoofer, Center, surround speakers slowly if you can spend in a staggered manner.

I am using SKS-HT728, they are not bad. But I suggest buying Polk RTi A5 even though it is costlier than HT728 as 2*6.5" drivers in RTi A5 will give you real punch in the mid bass range.

If you cannot spend in future, you may go for 5.1 or 7.1 setup with your budget now.
Go for audition of 5.1 speakers connected to 508 or equivalent models, buy the set which liked more.

I would recommend PSB Image B5 or B6 speakers depending on your requirement and you can audition the same with your AVR at our New Delhi showroom.

Hi All,

I went over and auditioned, the following:

- CA 550A with MS Aviano 1, Aviano 2 and Aviano 6 at C R Park.

The best of the lot were Aviano 2 and 6, I loved all the sounds coming out from both the pieces.

- Then I also went over to audition Klipsch and Polk Audio. We auditioned with Denon 700. I did not like Polk Audio speakers at all while the Klipsch speakers floored me, they were the Klipsch F30, very healthy sound end to end from L's to H's with Bass.

I will doing PSB and Wharfedale before settling down on any one of those.

how is 508 receiver? iam getting it next week from onkyo india along with tall boy speaker.. any mal parts/ i should look into? your personal review pls..

How much are you paying for the setup, pls share separate prices for the recover and speakers.

Oh BTW, I don't own one and am looking to buy one births reviews on amazon and testfreaks are a mixed bag.

Still thinking about it, it seems the 308 is a better bet but has less features.

combo price is 45 k for 5.1 speaker and 508...(i can afford maximum this much , though always dream for 609 and paradigm..) anway iam adding 2 extra surround making it 7.1, costing 52k..i dont want to buy amazon/ out of india bcoz i want warranty..i had nce purchased sony japan make camera (indian price 34k. got singapore 18k.. this stopped working and i struggled for parts.. got no support, then board went it costed me 10k, i instead threw camera and got cannon.12 mp at 12k)

Why don't you upgrade the receiver to 608 instead of spending 7k on 2 speakers.

608 is way better than 508 and it will be a worthwhile, you can add the speakers any day, but the core components are not bought every now and then, right?

Where are you located?

very good suggestion..but i got no idea about 609 price..can i get tall boy+609 for 52?please waiting 4 ur reply

yeah.... me too....

as i'm also planning to buy TX SR 508 + SKS HT 728 combo....

pls let me know individual prices as well as pkg prices of the two combos.... i.e. 508+728 and 608+728

is there any other better speaker pkg avilable from onkyo than 728?

shall we change receiver to 609.. i think 7.2 +ONLINE SOFTWARE UPGRADE AVAILABLE+ I PHONE COMPATIBLE ALSO>> I WILL BUY IF COMBO PRICE IS 55k MAX> u?

well, i can only dream of such a price at the place where i live! here, my onkyo dealer has quoted me 508 + 728 (with a generous discount) @ 59k!!!! he said the actual selling price is 67k!!!!!

and by the do you mean 608 or 609, coz 608 is a THX complying product with higher power rating than 508. the i-pod thing is optional. 609 is from NR series (Net enabled)

i think spending more money on receiver like 608 rather than speakers can not make sense unless we are planning to go for REAL Floor Standers in the future, and here too-correct me if i'm wrong-we can bi amp them from 508 which should power them well. i am more intersted in buying a better speaker package. 508 is according to me, quite future proof, way ahead in terms of features and atleast at par with HK 255 or Denon 1611 in terms of power which cost a lot more than than 508

@Paritosh, if you want 5.1 setup then I guess it is 728 or 528 for you. Onkyo dealers also have Pure Acoustics stuff, you can try that as well.

I will get back to you with the prices I got for all the setup, have quotes with me, I think 59K is too high for this combo.

@drkavint: I am going this weekend to audition some more speakers and rap up the auditioning round. Onkyo 609 won't be available until Diwali in India, that is when Onkyo launches new stuff generally.

I am suggesting upgrade to Onkyo 608 , the reason being, 608 scores more points and has a better feedback on video upscaling as compared to 508, 508 has many issues when it comes to video upscaling, sniff around the web and you would know what I am talking about.

I will share the prices I got in evening when I get back home.

well, i am relying on my BDP and AirTel Digital STB for video upscalling. so, upscalling ability of 608 on that front might be a redundency, wouldn't it?
is there any other advantage?
what are the known issues with 508 with video scalling?
