+1 Soulforged.
Agree, it's difficult to say the amp is the culprit. I have a Yamaha A-S1000 paired to Tannoy Mercury V4 and I initially had a Denon CDP for a source. I did feel that the sound was quite sharp and tonal/tends to cause listening fatigue after a while.
I then replaced the source with a Marantz CDP6004, there was a noticeable improvement in the sound and harshness/tonality had reduced a fair bit and I can even say there was more bass to the sound now.
It's a fair assessment to say that the entire chain contributes albeit to different degrees.
To soulforged's suuggestion, I had the opportunity of getting hold of a Lyrita Audio 2A3SET tube amp that a friend loaned to me for a few weeks and the harshness/sharpness had completely gone and the sound was much more relaxed and more involving, with the source and speakers / interconnects all remaining the same.
I really enjoyed the tube amp, but at the same time I felt that it was more suited to slow numbers than to fast paced / dancy tunes that the tube tends to round-off / soften up it seems to take the kill the energy in them.
I wish I could have both the amps and switch between them depending on the songs played!
