Dear All,
I want some serious suggestion here. Does Pre+Power Amp combination sound better than Integrated amp. In fact I have offered the following used pre and power amp. at the following price: -
NAD -1000 (pre) + NAD 208 (power) @ 45K
NAD -1000( pre) + NAD 214(power) @ 30K
I just want to know is this price is OK. Actually I am considering to having the NAD 326Bee which is the better option.
Thanks in advance

funnily was just talking abt this in another post. there is hardly any difference between the two in lower end set ups imo. def not worth the extra price youre paying for it. imo you should go for the integrated. whats your speakers

Hi,

The NAD 1000 is a very good pre amplifier. It also offers the advantage of phono pre amplifier inputs for moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. This will be very useful if you have or buy a turntable. The 326 BEE does not offer these facilities.

The prices, however, seem to be on the higher side for used equipment although condition will be a consideration. If they are in mint condition you can ask for a 5 per cent to 10 per cent discount. If they are not, you can try to negotiate for a discount of 20 per cent on these prices.

All the best.

I use the NAD 106 (the upgraded NAD 1000) preamp and NAD 216thx poweramp. The combo is very good and much better than some of the NAD integrateds I've heard including the NAD 306, NAD C320, NAD C326BEE and you won't believe this, but even better than the NAD 1020A (preamp of the NAD3020A) + NAD 216thx combo. As microflex rightly pointed out, MC and MM are switchable. The preamp also has XLR outs which I don't use of course.

If you ask my personal opinion, the newer NAD integrateds (the ones without in-built phono stages) tend to sound a bit brighter than the older NADs. Don't know if this is got anything to do with the burn-in or age. I assume the modern NADs are designed to play digital music on and hence, sound brighter.

Regarding the price, all NAD preamps are expensive to buy, irrespective of whether they are new or pre-used. They are generally built very sturdy and are really very musical. A good NAD 1000 or 100 series preamp retails for a lot of money. I think the price quoted for the NAD 1000 + NAD 214 is fair considering what I paid for mine. Thanks

What equipments do you own as of now ? If this is your first hifi setup go for integrated.

rajkr100,

The advantage of having pre and power amp is FLEXIBILITY. You could upgrade for a powerful amp or a tube pre in the future.
