Hi,

I am trying to setup a home theatre system in my living room (open room). I wanted to check if there are any suggestions for good receivers and speakers that one can setup in such a configuration. Or is it hopeless to even spend on expensive speakers and receivers in an open room and should just go for an inexpensive box sets? I am looking at a budget of about 50-75K and was leaning towards buying some Yamaha receiver and Polk speakers (decision based on very limited knowledge).

Do let me know if there are any suggestions.

Regards,
-Prakash.

pure copper cables is all that you need for wiring do not go after expensive cables, it will only make a minor difference and that too if you are a keen listener, i would suggest a setp by step upgrade, get bookshelves and avr now then add the rest later

Open room is actually better for sound as reflections will be less, so less mix.

Problem is laying wires to connect your speakers.

Thanks for the replies. I have gone to ProFx and Onkyo showroom and had a chance to talk to them. One problem with the layout is that the room does not have all 4 walls. So it leaves no space to fix one of the surround speakers. They are both suggesting adding ceiling speakers to act as the surround speakers. Any suggestions or comments regarding the same?

You could mount your surround speakers on a suitable stand and place them at equal distance at two sides of your seating position.

I use a similar setup and have my surrounds placed at both ends of my couch and has worked well for me. Surrounds are meant to be placed on the sides of the viewer (in 5.1) and not above the head. Imagine if a train passes off screen to the right, you will hear the train passing over your head which might not be the best experience.

@hdmaniac: Thanks for the response, I will consider it.

I had a chance to check out the yamaha aventage receiver and looking at the RX-850 model. The shop guy suggested to get the NS-555 series of floor speakers. I was thinking of getting tower speakers from Yamaha and getting the center and surround speakers of Polk brand. Do comment if you have an opinion on the setup.
