Hi friends,

I am going to get a Panasonic Viera TH-50AS610D TV this week... (75.5k from local store / 77 from pana show room)

and would like to know if i need any stabilizer or surge protector for this...

Currently our home(excluding ac's and refrigerator) is running on Sukam Shiny Sine Wave HUPS 1550 VA (Su-Kam :: Shiny Sine Wave UPS - Ideal For Both Homes And Offices) in ups mode as its mainly used for running pc during power cuts.

We have less/no voltage fluctuations but i dont want to take risks.

Have a Voltage stabilizer from Keeline whiich we bought few yrs back for our 22 in sam crt tv

Can i use this one.

I was planning to use one of these but thought to get suggestions before...

Sollatek TVGuard Voltage Stabilizer

Sollatek TVGuard Voltage Stabilizer - Sollatek : Flipkart.com

or

Belkin Ultimate Series 8-Socket Surge Protector

Belkin : Ultimate Series 8-Socket Surge Protector

TIA for your suggestions.

HI Krithik
congrats on your purchase. Recently when my brother bought a 40" Sony TV from Reliance they suggested using "crystal plus" stab from V-guard which has a built in surge protector.

you may want to check out.

Hi Krithik,

Have you purchased the TV? If yes can you please share your experience with the product and details about the picture quality etc.

Thanks

I'm very skeptical about all these surge suppressors and spike busters. The terms apparently are used interchangeably.

Spike are very short duration ( milli second) voltage spike caused by things like inductive loads like motors starting up and lightning or some large switching pulses. They kill because the resulting voltage in unprotected equipment is severely exceeded for the semiconductor parts for a very short duration. Enough to blow some of them. This is controlled by special components that limit the spike voltage seen by the circuit. If struck by lightning or large spikes these protection parts may need to be replaced for continued protection.

Surge however is the supply voltage increasing suddenly and sustained for a short while. Maybe several milliseconds or even longer. This also causes increased voltage on parts but much lower than spikes but cause damage most often due to heat generated by the increased voltage. This is handled by a switched or motor controlled voltage stabiliser.

Good engineering practice usually includes 'spike busters' in the mains supply line of the equipment though no manufacturer mentions this. Especially ones which have an inbuilt SMPS which means ....most equipment today.
Good power amps all have this. But as the price drops they might skimp on this to keep to the price line ! But with safety requirements becoming more stringent now it's possible that they ALL have to conform to this.

We have some voltage fluctuation in our area and occasional surges. I've never used a separate spike buster or a voltage stabiliser and have never had a problem in over 40 years ! Maybe I'm lucky ?.....or maybe most guys don't need one unless you are in a really bad area ( power wise).:)
