I plan to add a subwoofer in my stereo system. Any experience on this subwoofer.

Any other suggestions are also welcome.

Mostly playing digital lossless source
Dac/Preamp - TEAC NT-503
Amp - Parasound JC1 monoblock
Speakers - Monitor audio PL-300

Hi

This sub is supposedly good...heard other models in Sunfire...not this one....

Given you have a stereo set up...you dont have a sub out or LFE and hence need to rely on High and Low level connections which some subs offer and not all....

http://www.sunfire.com/XTEQ12.asp

I am not able to trace the owners manual which would possibly show how these connections can be made for a stereo setup.....it is better to download the manual and confirm the same before investing....

I would look at other brands too....Velodyne , BIC America etc.......I personally use a BIC America PL200 which has such High/Low level connections meant for stereo amp hooking up....you can check the specs, budget and decide accordingly.....

I am planning to use minidsp to build crossover

With no disrespect to others, I feel the BIC won't do justice to the Monitor Audio PL-300 & parasound amp. I've heard the sunfire trusubs & HRS long back. They are really good & always give a tactile feel. For music you should look at Rythmik or REL to keep up with the PL300's.
Ps: I used to be an ex BIC venturi owner. But are you serious you need a subwoofer for MA-PL300?

Hi,

None taken at all! We are all here to share our experiences and views....

Venturi series is the entry level from BIC America....overall their famous sub is F12 which I felt was not that great and took a risk to own their H100ii....it was a good risk decision....the performance was amazing and I sold it to my out stationed friend who kept pestering me for it...I also wanted to check the PL200 which was now being sold at a reasonable rate....

End of the day, after auditioning only one can decide what is bliss or discomfort....hence a decision needs to be taken wisely....as for me, I have heard the other big brands and yes they are good...if you are on a tight budget...BIC America does serve the purpose.

Thanks for your inputs. I am looking for a smaller sub with enough power. I have never auditioned BIC subs but there seem to be considerable difference in the amp RMS.

minidsp canbe used for subwoofer integration

Not yet decided but I may go in for Dirac live as well

If you need to audition BIC America in Mumbai...visit ProAudioHome....I picked my PL200 from them...you will need to come to Mumbai to do that.

There is a dedicated Thread on BIC America owners, you can read some posts on actual feedback etc. if you wish.

Bottomline whatever sub you choose based on specs, size, performance etc. please audition for your own satisfaction

Thanks for your suggestions. I would want to go with a smaller sub so that it doesn't stand out in the room. MA PL300 has decent bass but would like to try out if subwoofer can add more depth

i also plan to experiment with minidsp

why not look at deftech super cube 4000 or 6000, they have a small foot print to the bass they produce

That ML speaker is almost full range and sells for about 8k$. For most people, there is no need for a subwoofer. Having said that, technically speaking, you can add true active subwoofers to almost any speaker and add value to the sound provided you have adequate room size. But then, that is a different game and will need carefully chosen subs ( usually a stereo pair ) and very careful setup. To add real bass to a speaker like that, you are talking capable subs here. And the total outlay will skyrocket.

Adding some big subwoofer will just add bass energy and boom and will take away the benefits you already have with the ML speaker now.

I also suggest to go with Rhythmic sub as I have seen people using Rhythmic sealed sub with excellent speakers and most of them use two subs.
Regarding Dirac, I prefer Dirac over anthem ARC.

An old thread I just came across. Maybe dead and buried by now :)

But sipping something cold over a lazy Monday afternoon, I couldn't let the opportunity to pass :)

So here goes my stream of thought. The larger a driver gets , the more difficult it is to control it. You need big...really big magnets..and seriously high amp power to keep it all under control. This is the realm of high end subwoofers, which cost almost as much as my total setup.

When looking at subs at reasonable prices, we have to trade between sub driver excursion and speed. And it depends on the speakers they have to match too.

A sub with a large driver will always trade speed for excursion. So if looking for music, best to stick with a sub with a driver under 10 inch, and being sealed will be the icing on the cake too. These subs won't go too deep, but will have the speed to match the main speakers. Many a times, folks find it difficult to tune subs for a 2.1 channel setup. They belive it is cross over and level. When most times it is speed of bass :)

One more thing. Between a single driver sub of 15 inch and a 2 driver sub of 8 inches..i would always choose the 2 driver sub for its speed and musicality alone. Manufacturers deliberately don't advertise , so they don't kill their own market. And all their 2 driver subs d are for the 2 channel music market, whereas their single driver subs are for the HT market :)

Agree....the 12 inch PL 200 BIC America I am using really kicks clean deep bass for music and movies.....i couldn't ask for more value with decent performance.....specs, size, cabinet design, ported or not, type of sub amp etc all matter...most imp...placement.....

I would humbly bid to disagree on 2 driver sub Vs 15" drivers. You can't beat the laws of physics.

Hi helium flght...this is a friendly banter. But why would manufacturers make larger taller subs with two smaller woofers. When they already make single 15 inch driver subs.
