As the title says I was looking for some statistics from forum members here on preferences of wall mounting/table top their displays. Pros/cons of both please. Technical or aesthetic advantages and disadvantages of both please. This will help me to decide if I should wall mount or keep the TV on a table.

Many thanks.

I generally prefer table-top placement as it's easy to shift the TV around if necessary. Though I prefer this, I've not shifted my TV from it's position since I bought it 3 years ago (or the TV before that for 2 years). :p

Wallmounting definitely helps in minimising the physical intrusion of the TV into the living space (esp. if you have space constraints). I'm now running into such constraints, so I'll most likely get it wall mounted soon. I do have a problem that I want it mounted exactly in the (horizontal) middle of the wall, but that would mean it will stick out into a door by about 3 inches. I'll probably use a swing-arm to get around this. (or leave it at that -- that door leads into my bedroom, and I use that door only at night to go in and sleep there).

Thanks Hydra. Please vote as well. :p

wall mounting.

But plasma owners should think twice before wall mounting, heat will suck the life out of your display. I have a plasma wall mounted.:sad::sad:

Both have its own merits...

Table top :

Advantages : convenient to connect cables, easy to dust the TV, again easy to read the labels...

Disadvantages : If you have kids @ home < than 5 yrs old, you need to run around them. occupies space in living room when short on space..

Wall Mount :

Advantages : space saving & ofcourse you save some money (TV Table) :ohyeah:

Disadvantages : Even if your TV has rear/side/down facing inputs, very difficult to get the cable connected thru the narrow gap... Most common that i have seen are the composite cables being perpendicular to the TV & the edges get bent... Connecting Optical cable which again is perpendicular to the TV..

Wall mount any time. The only downside is that you should have small hands to connect the cables at the back or call for a helper when you want to change cables- the way I do:)

If we use a bracket like the one above, there should be no problem in connecting cables behind the TV, or cleaning behind the TV.

As the screen size increases, swivel stands like these are very expensive... But yes.. this would solve the problems..

I am going for table top. I can't find a way to wall mount my Panasonic L42ET60D. There are no mounting holes in the rear!

per panasonic india website, your TV has wall mount compatibility... They are VESA compatible - Y. So you should have mounting holes @ the back....

Today TV's of all screen size have universal mounting holes @ the back...They would be mentioned as VESA compatible 100 x 100 (or) 200 x 200...check the TV manual for any VESA specification...

Wall mount for me. One disadvantage is that the TV is fixed and if you are a person who likes to change room settings every few months, then you are almost getting nowhere from then on. Also I feel that TVs look smaller when they are wall mounted compared to same set if kept on a table top. Else, wall mount saves precious real estate, looks good, and is safe (assuming that the mount or the wall will not give up).

Oh, your TV will definitely have wall mount option. This TV is VESA mount compatible.
Check your manual and visit your dealer. If the TV is recently bought, he should wall mount without additional charges, except maybe fitting charges since this will be an additional visit.
Below are images from the net and an extract from the ET60B (UK model) manual.

That aside, I would always suggest wall mount for better looks and ease of cleaning. Today's wall mounts have an allowance to slightly tilt the TV upwards to connect cables.

You are right. When the TV is kept just one feet away from wall on top of a A/v unit, it looks much bigger.

Getting my HTPC (Vertical chassis) table/stand made today. Will take a week or so. Self designed, tweaked to crazy details.

Tabletop .
It looks bigger
Viewing plane is better . Most of the wall mounting installation are fitted little higher than the sofa viewing level .

Thanks for the info. I will keep it on a self designed high/table/stand which I am getting made since yesterday for reasons mentioned by Saket.

Exactly. I am an indulging personality and feel the need to control it by taking extreme measures. Table top will give me the flexibility of keeping the TV out of my bedroom when/if things go out of control :)

Good to know info. Thanks.
