I got a Sony Bravia KDL-46XBR8 TV and hooked it up to Tata Sky HD STB via HDMI Cable.
I get only the Audio. The screen is totally blank (no video). I get a message saying "Unsupported signal. Please check device output."

Any suggestions on how I can overcome this issue?

A simple solution would be to connect the component/composite cable also to your TV. Component(Red, Green, Blue cables), Composite(Yellow) is analog & should come up irrespective of the resolution. Adjust the Output resolution on the box and then switch inputs to HDMI and see if there is some signal. Repeat for different resolutions and see which works.

HDMI port of my tatasky HD stopped working audio as well as video. box will be replaced in 2 days because HD box is not repairable like SD boxes. as they dnt have the box in stock they have to get it from Andheri (mumbai) main office hence 2 days wait. watching through composite now as my 50v20 is wall mounted and component inputs r behind the TV.

i suggest u contact the tata people i think ur box is defective!

I already tried connecting the component video cables. If I do that the picture is scrambled (moves up and down) and is in black and white.

W.r.t Tata Sky HD STB being defective, I was getting the signals properly on my CRT TV. The moment I hooked up to my HDTV it started giving problems.

FYI - TV works fine when I connect my PS3 using HDMI cable

It supports 1080i. But I was not aware that Tata Sky was 1080/50i. Can the output of STB be changed from 50i to 60i?

The technical specs of TV say that it supports 1080/60i.

i'll let the ts hd owners answer that,
the tv's sold in india support 1080 50i so normally this is not required

Is 50i and 60i is what they refer as between PAL and NTSC?
If yes, then I guess the PAL to NTSC converter box is the solution.

that will be ATSC,the hdtv standard, before buying make sure the converter supports the resolution and framerates

The 'TataSKY HD' set-top box only outputs 50i and does not have an option to switch frame rates. The 'Dish TruHD' set-top box is the only one that 'reportedly' allowed switching between 50i and 60i. But even if it used to allow this, currently I do not see the option available on Dish TruHD.

Tata Sky HD box allows you to switch to 720p. You can try doing that.

For the records, it allows - 1080i, 720p, 576p and 576i.

All the HD set-top boxes have the option of selecting those resolutions. But, the problem is not the resolution, it is the frame rate. Even with 720p the TataSky box will output 50i, while apparently the OP's TV is compatable only with 60i.

what is the original signal from TS 720P or 1080i? because i don't want to do up-scaling or down-scaling by the box for HD channels! and what about SD signals? are they progressive or interlaced. Thanks

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
