Someone asked me to take a look at a Teleton a 300 amp for them, and a quick look inside has revealed leaky capacitors.

They are all Elna capacitors, but some have red lettering on them and others black.

Does this mean something fundamentally different between the two types or are the capacitance and voltage the only things that matter?

More than likely fundamentally different. Could be things such as high temp, or even more likely, low leakage. Could be chosen for low ESR or the better damping qualities of gen purpose.

Elna has a long history of audio grade capacitors and a wide variety of them at that, so it could be chosen based on those preferences alone.

One of the most hilarious things I see is on forums where they think they can recap some audio gear like this with whatever they like and expect it to perform similarly. But it does take quite the experience to acquire a feel for what's what..

Figure out what the exact models are, look up their data sheets, study the differences between them, ascertain their positions and functions within the circuit and see how those differences benefit that, and then you can start to make an educated guess as to a suitable replacement.
