Hi everyone,

My name is Arjun, and I'm new here. Looking to buy bookshelf speakers for listening to music (only music - no video). I mainly listen to alt rock and trance, and will be playing them via my ipod.

Could you tell me what speakers I should go for? Also, should I invest in an amplifier to improve the quality? I can spend upti 20K on an amp.
Please let me know your suggestions.

Thanks! Would appreciate your feedback..

Arjun

P.s - attached a pic if the room where the speakers are going to be used.. Approx size around 200 sq ft.

For speakers my budget is max 30k. Do I need to buy a receiver or can I connect the iPod to the amp directly? Does it make sense investing in a CD player too at a later stage? Look forward to your replies.

you can look at kef q series, monitor audio bronze, usher s520 apart from others

you will need an amplifier to drive the speakers

Hi Arjun
Apart from the suggestions already given you can also listen to speakers made by Soundsgreat (Sreekanth) since you are in Bangalore
The speakers are priced at 25k
You can read my review in the review section

You would definitely need an amp to power the speakers while using Ipod as source.

Ipod as source is not the best so later on you can invest in good ipod dock, or a cd player

Hope this helps

Hi Arjun,

Some information that can help:

A HIFI component sterio setup comprises of multiple components:

1. Source - Could be digital/analog
a. CD player
b. DAC
c. PC
d. Turn table and so on

2. Amplifier
a. Integrated amplifier
b. Pre-power amplifier and so on

3. Speakers
a. Bookshelves
b. Floor standers

4. Cables and Interconnects
a. Interconnects to connect source to amps
b. speaker cables

Choice of sterio setup will be dictated by
1. Genre of music you like
2. Room dimensions/acoustics
3. Budget (IMPORTANT FACTOR)

For starters following are questions to answer:
1. What kind of music do you like?
2. What is the TOTAL budget?
3. Are you OK with step by step upgrade (recommended)?
4. Are you open to pre-owned equipment? Good option as many audiophiles take very very good care of their equipment.

Many times we start with a thought of an HIFI system in mind and a budget but as we learn more we get the above picture and system evolves over time. Hence I deliberately shared above details upfront.

Since there are so many variable involved in setting up a HIFI system - especially so for sterio IMHO, I would sincerely suggest and request you to listen to a few sterio setups either in a shop having demos or visit a HFV friend and check his setup. I am sure there are many friendly HFV members who will be more than willing to do so. :)

Above information comes into picture over a period of time as our systems keep evolving. But it is important to know that we are going to go through this phase hence I shared upfront so you can plan well and in informed manner.

I know these are many things and considerations I have put up but it is important to get overall picture to help plan better especially if we are building our first setup.

Just my humble thoughts as I have myself gone through this. :)

Thanks!

Arjun,

With your post you are looking for a stereo(Music) setup with 50K budget(30k for Speakers+20K for Amp)

Below are some of the well Known amp brands(Not in particular order), which covers in your budget for entry level

1.Marantz
2.Cambridge
3.Denon
4.Yamaha
5.Norge
6.Sonodyne
7.Nad

Some of the Speakers around your budget are already mentioned ,hence listing here are book shelf speakers.

1.Kef Q300
2.Usher 520
3.Monitor Audio Bronze

Personally i would recommend to go with Pre-owned Stereo amps from our FM's,which is VFM( Just few days before there was sweet sounding NAD was up for sale, But now sold)+BS speakers. You might need to invest on cables\stands also, which would extra budget.

But 50K good enough for a entry level stereo set-up.

All the best

For ur genre of Music, strike off the kef Q300. They aint for trance imho. Basically what you gonna need is a speaker with a lot of Bass.. hmm. Unless ur going to get yourself a sub, you need floor standers buddy.

I would suggest auditioning a few active speakers. There are good ones available for 50K and they eliminate the game of speaker-amp matching and wanting to upgrade the amp to see if the speaker benefits. They are good enough for recording studios so may work for you as well.

Caveat - most active speakers are monitors and are designed to give you the "truth" about the recording and not necessarily sound "nice".

Since you have a budget of 50 k and lot of confusion :p , there is an alternative option to look for. See if you can audition focal bird 2.1 system. Package has two satelite looking speakers, an integrated amp with a down firing Sub. This system is intended for music only. It can readily support your iPod on wireless or it has digital input as well (please check). This one has very good soundstage and impressive musical expression for a normal living room.

EPOS EPIC II speakers between 30-35k. Paired with Creek evo or Destiny you are in musical heaven. Very nice combo in a budget.
