Hi Guys,

Im planning to go for the Sonus 2605 package for my HT room which I shall build from next month onwards. The room will be 18/12 feet, so I shall be able to have a 8-10feet of tv viewing distance easily, which brings me to my current predicament. What tv to go for? I will be doing the interiors of the room accordingly....

For a 10feet viewing distance, Im sure I can opt for a 50/55 inch er. Now the question is LCD/LED or Plasma. I don't want to go into that debate. But what i wish to understand is that if I can control the light intensity in the room, in my budget, is plasma the only way forward keeping in mind that i want a big tv? Moreover, I do have a broadband internet connection from vsnl downstairs, so I'd like to understand how I can connect my TV with my present connection. Can the cable be split & extended upstairs & inserted directly in the tv or do I have to go the wireless route (in that case modem needs to be changed I think)...what is the way forward?

Any particular brands or models which you may suggest is welcome. I was contemplating taking a Demo of Sharp TVs.

Thanks in advance

Guys,
I need some answers...the thing which is bugging me is that since I do not want Smat features, even 3Ds not important, I could opt for a model like say Pana X50D bu in that case I will be losing out on PQ! Why can't I have a TV which is the latest as far as PQ is concerned & yet has none smart features/3D?!!!!

If I want great blacks, I have to opt for a model like ST50 or UT50 at least, which come with 3D & internet ready features which I don't want!

What is the solution here guys???!!!

There is no choice. All high end models are 3D and Smart TV features enabled. And this is not just with plasma, even high end LEDs are like that. Basically it goes like this:

???? ?? ?? ??? ???? ??. ???? ???? ?? ?? ?? ??? ???? ??.

(If you wish to eat, this is what you shall eat. If you don't want to eat, this is what you shall eat).

Even if you search "best non 3d tv" on net, it shows all results with 3d tvs only by considering '3d' as a tag and ignoring 'non'.;)

Seems companies won't let us outdated even if we want

So as I can make out, I will have to settle for a 3D 'Smart Tv'!!!

Could someone tell me how I can hook up my VSNL Broadband connection in my house to the TV? And will my PS3 be able to play 3D Blue rays?

Is it worth spending time on samsung/LG demos?

You can connect any broadband connection to TV via ethernet (wired) out via wireless router. For the former, you need to run an ethernet rj-45 cable from router/switch to TV. In the later case, TV must be wireless ready our you must buy a wireless dongle for TV; needless to say that your home must be wireless via wireless router and TV must be able to get sufficient signal strength.

Ps3 is able to play 3D bds. It is worth demo'ing all models so that you get the correct TV as per your needs.

Given that plasma TVs have become almost non existent in the market, what options does a buyer with a budget of 1 Lakh, looking for 50+ inch TV, have?

Prosenjit,
thanks for your generous offer, I sincerely appreciate it. The issue is that 26-28th are all working days so, I won't be free before 6:30 at least. So as per the schedule youv'e drawn out, we will have time only for the beer I guess :D

Can we meet some weekend once the New year celebrations are out of the way & things are a little less hectic?

Hey buddy, tks for clearing some of my doubts. Btw I really like your setup at home, seems you are one of the more discerning types!

Now coming back to my options let me spell out what I understood, correct me if im wrong....

OPTION 1> To switch to wireless I will need to change my modem into a wireless one & the tv has to support wifi. But I think this won't work for me since I live in a slightly large house with big walls & stairs so I doubt if the signal will travel to my 3rd floor HT room.

OPTION 2> I need to buy a router first. The VSNL internet line will go into it instead of the PC modem- one cable will go back into the PC from the router for the internet connection of the PC & the second (RJ 45 cable) will run upstairs from the router to my TV. AM I RIGHT? Do I need to call the VSNL guys to do this? How much will all this cost? If I HAVE to buy a Smart TV, then I might as well be Smart :)

One more thing, in the second setup, will the speed get slower when the PC internet is running along with the TV internet?

Looking forward to your suggestions

i live in kalighat...if anyway you live in nearby area...we can get demos from 7 pm...
but 2 problems are there..
1.noon is best for peaceful demo..as in evening there are lots of people..and shop guys wont entertain us completly for a exact side by side etc comaprison..
2.as you will be just back from work...you will be tired..its fact..nothing to worry.

then make it 29th sat noon (say from 11 am to 3 pm) if your other works and plans permit....from 30th i wont be avilable...:o

Yes, 29th sat looks fine...which are the showrooms you plan to visit? My office is in Theatre Road..just fyi

Since you live in a large home, wireless option may not work for you. So out may be option 2 for you. From the vsnl modem/router, via the ethernet port you can run the rj45 cable. If this port is used, you may require a 4 or 8 port hub/switch. You do not need vsnl guys to do this. Your modem must be configured in PPPoE mode and dhcp must be on.

But overall connecting TV to net is not really exciting. There is not one can do much. Browsing is painful, and so are apps like Facebook and twitter. YouTube requires high speed. I rarely (never) use internet/smart apps on TV.

This fact really pisses me off. On one hand I didn't want smart features but I have to opt for a smart tv as invariably the higher priced ones have best PQ but come with these features. Now on the other hand if I buy such a TV it would be a waste if one doesn't use the features, as in your case...I guess I shall have to give it a try at least & see..

Btw would my reliance usb dongle work if I attach it to a smart tv?
