The essence of photography

Hi Ajay,
Have you considered the Sony DSC RX1 ? Pretty good images and initial reviews seem good. Probably not comparable to a Leica M9 or so but seems good.
Have a look at some of the images in the following link

p.s apologies Ajay, I didn't have your price range in mind, but guess it's worth a look :)

A compact full frame with a 35mm f/2 Carl Zeiss lens is a mouth watering proposition. But in India the Sony RX 1 is probably going to cost around 150K! Not in my budget. I am still trying to convince myself to buy a compact and the Lumix LX7 for 35K seems to be the best value for money option.

I am thinking of buying a good high end compact camera for days (and holidays) when I don't want to lug around the stuff, which I am currently using. Enter the new Leica D LUX 6 which will cost roughly 55K if imported through Adorama or B&H Photo. The D Lux 6 is more or less a rebranded Panasonic Lumix LX7 which imported through the same online vendors will cost around 35K.

I am thinking of postponing my purchase of a wide angle lens for my D700 and buying one of these compacts instead. Both come with the same Leica lens with an effective 35mm focal length of 24-90 and an f/1.4 aperture! I am not sure how good these compacts will be for low light photography as the size of their sensors is quite small. But this is the closest I can get to owning a Leica, so I may just buy one of these :)

I was swept away by the Panasonic manufactured Leica compacts for precisely 24 hours. They look sexy but I no longer feel that they can take good pictures. I've been doing a little bit of pixel peeping recently. My conclusion is that in the beginning is the sensor. Every sensor except the FX (24mmx36mm) is a compromise. The level of detail which a modern full frame DSLR can achieve with professional lenses is far beyond what any cropped sensor is capable of. A cropped sensor Nikon or Canon DSLR'S like D300/D7000/7D/600D CANNOT pull out the level of detail which a D600/D700/D800 or 6D/5D Mark 2/5D Mark 3 can. I am very fond of my D700 but I believe that the writing is already on the wall. Very soon I will be trading it in for a D800 :)

Believe me Ajay.. I am not surprised :) and was expecting it some day.

I was looking for a light weight professional camera for a friend and came across the recently launched Fuji XE 1 and 18-55 f/2-4 lens. I was impressed by what I read on the net and ordered two units. One for my friend and one for me. The camera and lens seem to have superb build quality. Does it mean that I can stop lugging around huge DSLR's and lenses? Are lightweight mirror less cameras the future of photography? I have never been sufficiently convinced by the photo offerings of Sony and Panasonic. Quite simply they have their fingers in too many pies. But Fuji is in a different league. A heavy weight contender with a history of photography related products. Can it compete with the ubiquitous presence of Nikon and Canon? Can it take on my D700 and Nikon/Tokina glass? I will know soon. I spent the evening getting used to the controls. I did not press the shutter even once. It is a waste of time to shoot pictures before you have mastered all the functions and features of the camera you are using.

I am extremely happy to join the Fujifilm family. Bought a FUJIFILM X-E1+FUJINON XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS yesterday. My first camera which is not a Nikon! Both the camera and the 'kit' lens exceed the very high expectations I had from this camera. The build quality and optics are absolutely superb. Looking forward to the launch of the Fujinon Super EBC XF 1024 mm f/4 R LM OIS and Fujinon Super EBC XF 55200 mm f/3.54.8 R LM OIS wide and telly lenses.

For build quality and optics the Fuji X series is miles ahead of other brands available in the market. Anybody wanting to capture remarkable images as an enthusiastic amateur should definitely check out Finepix XF-1, X-10, X-E1. The XE-1 has a 23.6 mm x 15.6 mm (APS-C) X-Trans CMOS sensor. It gives one the option of using Fuji X series lenses or Leica/Voigtlander/Zeiss lenses along with an adaptor. The 18-55 kit lens which is bundled with this camera is comparable to the pro lenses being offered by other brands. I believe that Fuji XE-1 is presently the best cropped sensor camera in the world. It renders jaw dropping color and detail. Along with the kit lens it costs around 80K. The X-10 would probably cost around 35K. It has a fixed lens providing 28-112 focal length and f/2-2.8 aperture.
