The Fear-Factor

I am afraid that my amplifier may fall down. :ohyeah:

Because it is inside the speaker, the speaker is on a stand, the stand rest on just three spikes, the spikes are razor sharp, our maid furiously mops around them leaving my heart in my mouth.

1. Connecting an analogue device, with analogue cables, forgetting the volume is turned high up. I always feel, the woofers have blowed off. Following it I normally tries playing all my test tracks to make sure nothing happend. A little difference and it's the end of the world for me!

2. Kids coming home, trying to move the speakers from the place.its a pain to reposition!

Even today when I want to play my CDs:

1) I first turn on the radio and let it run for about 15 min at low volume.

2) Then I put the CD I want to listen to.

3) I have never overclocked the AVR ever. Max volume -13db :)

So far, I have seen that several of the claimed fears are due to poorly engineered equipment in home audio sector which can cause failure in certain conditions.

Sorry just saw this one and remembered a few FEARS:

In the old days, we used to live in a big house with a tiled roof and rafters. Dad used to have the amplifier at one end of the hall and run his speaker wires through the rafters to the other end. I remember when he switched on the amp, he used to watch the output valve carefully. He would say, if the glow was brighter, it meant rats had bitten off his speaker wires or there may be a short circuit. He would stop looking once the valves heated up and the amp got started. Could not understand the logic of the brightness but remembered him telling me this when I was a kid.

My FEARs

1) my 2 year old son fiddling with my turntable while it's playing (I usually play my vinyl without the dust cover on)
2) my 2 year old son knocking down my equipment rack, he once tried to climb it up, like a ladder
3) both my sons cranking up the volume (after all, I'm using BPL Sanyo 700T speaks and my NAD 216thx is capable of blowing their cones out of the frame)
4) my sons coming near my vinyl collection or near my vinyl record covers kept on the centre piece while the record plays, they can easily cause damage
5) kids near the speakers, my son and my brother's son have already attempted to push in the dust caps
6) wasps coming in through the window, may try to build a nest or two in my speaker's tweeter cavity

Kids and wasps?

That's more scary than termites!

Kid of my neighbour gave me heartache once. I could hear a 'thud' noise coming from my room. When I checked, it was neighbouring kid kicking on my 10" woofer cone (PP) but protected by the cloth grill.

I was so furious that I asked him to leave and he went home crying (Another version of Denise the menace..kind of sad that I had to scold him). Another one poked a dust cap of a small speaker.

Wasp saliva could rust screws I guess and mess up speaker and pre sockects. I use 'Hit' on them.

I fear my speakers falling while being on stand since i have this phobia that the stands are not stable (they are very stable and weigh 10 kg each) i check every night just before going to my room to see if they wobble.

This is one of the reasons that I have always preferred floor-standers.

Of course, I've never done any push-over A/B testing! :D

I always have some fear/nervousness whenever I switch on the system (i.e whether the system will start working properly or not). Thanks to the confidence the manufacturers give these days

My fear factor: One day or the other my neighbors will come and throw things out from my house!!! I normally listen at a higher volume level

Thanks

talk of fear factor and i dreamt one of the speakers falling on floor and the cabinet opened up but on a good note i brought the same speaker set again...

am i paranoid ?

I hold on to my breath (each time) while 'switching on' my amp from stand-by. Always am in tenterhooks during this brief process. 'Always' get the creepy feeling that I might hear a small 'phuut' from either of the speakers to notify some distort signal being generated from the amp. Did struggle with the amp initially with this fault, which thankfully has been completely eliminated now. But, the fear lingers on ........
