Off late, lots of movies from Hollywood are shot 1.85:1. All these movies are released on 16:9 aspect ratio. Most of the 3D movies are also 16:9.

I can't say for 2d, but for 3d I don't think that's a fair assessment, if I see here List of 3D films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the spread between 16:9 vs 2.35:1 seems pretty even.

If movies are going 16:9 as a trend then I think that's going backwards, nothing beats the immersion of scope.
