Hey guys,
As you'll can remember, I have been cribbing a lot about the issue of my NAK Cr2 player which used to refuse playing my tapes just a day after I bought it from a guy in Mumbai. When everr I tried playing the tape, the player would stop before the spool could get caught in the player (Nak has that facility). Then after sometime, the player just refused to play the tape and had the STOP button light on permemantly. After taking it to a couple of repair guys here, one of them said it might be a faulty transporter system, because the belts etc look fine. Several attempts to het a techician proved useless as most of these guys refused to touch the player.

Just a few days ago I got introduced to a person via a common friend, who agreed to help me with my Nak and today he sent me the possible reason my NAK has this issue. As you can see from the pic the Gear Wheel has broken  and now I need to try and find a replacement of the same size. It would be a massive help if some one could help me to source or get another wheel made in the same size. Ive been really struggling to get this fixed and Im not ready to give up till I see this player sing again! Your help and advice would be extremely valuable! Best regards!

I know that there are a few shops at lamington Road who still sell gear wheels for VCRs...

Maybe similar shops at S P Road in Bangalore ?

If you Whats App me a Photo of the Broken Cog, removed and placed next to a scale so that I have the Exact dimensions, Ill see what I can do in Mumbai.

PM me n I will send you my Mobile number.

Indian Ears that would be wonderful! I'll try my best to see what I can do and get you a scale... Im not sure whether I can find anything like this on SP road though. Selvin, Im not sure what you mean by your comment? Can you elaborate?

well, if you were in Chennai, Richie street would have been a good place to search. You'd not find the original NAK spare but you will probably find something similar. If you can get the wheel, it should be an easy fix.

On another note, something drastic could have happened for the wheel to snap like that. Or the seller may have stuck up the wheel using super glue before selling it to you :)

These are Rewind/forward gears. They engage the black spools to rewind forward the tape. Usually (not always) when teeths gets worn out it gets stuck but due to force breaks. There may be some pieces left/stuck in the mechanism. Also check the small gear for wear and tear. In old days these replacement gears used to come as a set, so worn out gear doesn't damage the new replaced gear.
Regards.

Before replacing any wheel you have to figure out number of teeth on the original wheel, more or less teeth on the replaced wheel may not serve any purpose as it might slip ( does not engage properly). In case if you do not find a nylon gear, next option would be metal gears. Gear cutting on metal works out very expensive. Check out this link for Nakamichi spares.

These are set of gear for Rewind/forward and in play mode reel winding purpose. Some Nak models come with idler tyre / wheel for this purpose. These gears will not fail easily.

Please ensure broken gear pieces not anywhere inside the mechanism.

One person little long back shared me that he fabricated a similar kind of gear for his NAK 202 deck somewhere from Peenya, Bangalore. I will try to find his contact number from my old mails. If I found I will PM to you.

That will be wonderful!!! On the other hand I wrote to Jeff Galin in the US from Elabs who repair Naks. This was his reply

Hi Sandesh,

The original failure was likely caused by a defective cam control motor.

The improved Nakamichi replacement cam control motor is $45.00 USD

The pulley and metal shield will need to be carefully transferred to the new motor.

A unused Nakamichi gear is $35.00

The shipping and handling is $14.75 via UPS within the contiguous U.S. 48 States OR $45 via non-insured mail outside the US.

I will send an e-mail when your order has been shipped.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Jeff Galin

The price of the replacement and shipping is cost me the the same as the price I paid for the Nak

Hi Sandesh, you can find the original replacement part on ebay. Search for idler wheel Nakamichi Sankyo transport. I am new here. I don't know if I can paste a link on posts. Take good care that you don't lose the retaining washer. Let me know if you need any help. All the best...

Indinakdoc, the CR1 doesnt have an idler wheel, if you check the 1st pic you will see that the gear has broken :(

Once I had a Nak BX1 and it had a similar problem and the mechanic (who is not here anymore) took a look at it and told me that the gear wheel from the assembly of some old Japanese player will suit it and I manage to locate it and he was able to fix it for me. If you take the deck to some old mechanics, they will be able to identify it ith similar old decks and spares of which are still available. I have a CR3 here ad let me see if it has similar gear wheel and if my present mechanic can give me some clue. Don't lose hope.

yes, agree

when I was in school, we came across a Grundig cassette recorder with a similar problem. I remember, my brother and I walked the length and breadth of Thakaraparambu (street in Trivandrum where electronics spares are sold) and we somehow located a shop which had similar looking gears. Checked the diameter (edge to edge specs) and the teeth size and picked up a few, tried them out and two of these were a perfect fit. So we also had a fix and also a spare for future replacement. Till this day, that cassette recorder is still running fantastically well and we never needed to use the spare :)

Any body think I might be able to find the right gear here - Alltronics or this one - 1.16" Brass Gear Wheel | Alltronics ? The shipping price is ridiculous though! 51$ :s

Sandesh,

It is very difficult to judge / identify a gear from picture. Two factor important to gear wheels for replacement. i.e teeth pitch and number of teethes.

My suggestion is don't go unless the spare part is specified for your deck. If you have any friends in Madurai try it in Town Hall road. There one shop still selling cassette player spares. You may get equivalent one as Reubensm said.

I found the person phone no. from my old pocket diary who fabricated a similar gear and will PM you today evening.
