Hi everyone.
Based on comments on this forum I was searching for a pair and luckily could get one on eBay early 604-8k.

The speakers are expected to be with me before month end.

In the meantime valuable tips/comments from fellow FM's are welcome to guide me with building of cabinet/cross over..

I shall be getting original crossovers along with speakers.

I intend to use my diy audio note kit one 300b amplifier.

Thanks..murli

Hi,

Congratulations on your Altec 604-8K speakers. They should be a good match with your 300B amp.

As for cabinets it depends on how large a cabinet you can fit into your listening room. The best I have heard is a huge 20 cu ft MLTL with Altec 604's driven by a Jeff Korneff 300B amp here in Madras. Size does matter.:)

However a good compromise will be the Altec 620 cabinet, but even that is quite big (10cu ft). If space is really tight then a 6 Cu ft like the Altec 612 can be used. The front baffle for these vintage drivers should be at least 24 inches wide, otherwise the midrange becomes thin.

Jeff Markwart who has done a lot of work with Altec crossovers says that the original 604K crossovers are good and do not need modification. You can however change out the old capacitors and resistors as they may be out of spec given their age.I prefer to use the Russian KBG & K75-10 paper in oil capacitors and Mills resistors.

Thanks for the tip George.Have never seen this plywood but shall check with local suppliers..I suppose thickness mentioned in plans is 3/4 inch?

Dear Rajiv and George,
I have completed the rough boxes as per your suggestions but in 18mm normal plywood as could not source the Birch Ply;I have played them with audionote 300b and Yamaha b-2..the sound with 300b is without background noise while Yamaha b-2 are sweeter.

Incidentally I got a pair of Onkyo scepter 2000 in 6/10 condition but sounds 9/10..paired with b-2 the magic keeps me glued to my chair..

Thanks for the help..murli

The 604's are unparalleled in my humble opinion... the only speakers to last in my abode... and believe me I have a pretty well documented history of upgrades! And with some very pricey and well known names! Congrats! They play very well with tubes though... so do experiment with tubes if you can.

And yeah... even in my case I would say that the chief conspirator in this direction was Rajiv... thanks rajiv...

Thanks Mr. Kadali,
I used 18mm ply all over..results are good but I did not do any comparison with other altec but did compare with only Onkyo sc-2000 which is bigger box and 4 way..Onkyo' are original and impressive..regards..murli..
