Whether for their sheer brilliance in recording or the once-in-a-lifetime combination of musicians, there are certain performances that just hit different. I recently stumbled upon some Furtwängler releases… and wow, they played at such a different level—it was almost scary good.

Handel - Messiah - Christopher Hogwood, AAM - Decca (also there on video)
Chopin - Complete Recordings - Dinu Lipatti - EMI
Mahler , Sym No 2 - Simon Rattle, CBSO - EMI
Bach, Brandenburg Concerto - Benjamin Britten, ECO - Decca
Beethoven - Violin Sonatas - Pinchas Zukerman - BMG

- Carmina Burana - Live from the Forbidden City - DG CD
- Hilary Hahn playing the Sibelius Violin Concerto. This is part of a DG CD which has her playing Schoenberg too.
- Solti's 1986 Beethoven's 9th from the Proms - I have heard this only on Youtube so the recording is not great, but the performance is phenomenal.
- Vivaldi's Le Quattro Stagioni - Trevor Pinnock/The English Concert - Archiv CD
- Beethoven's 5th and 7th - Carlos Kleiber - DG CD
