Hi Folks,

Need your inputs to decide on LED 32".

Toshiba PT200 or Sony W650A?

Sliding towards Toshiba because of the following:
1. I do not need a SMART TV (Sony has some SMART features)
2. supports upto 1TB external HDD (Sony only USB upto 8GB as informed by SE. Need to check).
3. 3 Years Warranty (manufacturer) + 1 or 2 years extended by Dealer. (sony 1 year + 2 year extended warranty)
4. Toshiba supports most of the formats on USB (Sony limited formats)
5. Price Rs 34999 (Sony Rs 42999) - MRP. (Without Negotiation) (what amount can be negotiated? Pai international - gives the lowest price in this Bangalore city.)

Narrowed on the above two brands only.

thanks

IMO go with Sony.
Extended warranty should be from the manufacturer, although dealer would provide it to you.
Dealer extended warranty is nothing but hogwash.

I have toshiba 40pb20 lcd. .. and would recommend it to anyone. ... for its picture quality. ... (not that sound quality is bad either)....one of my frd had Sony. .. and believe me I am surprised again and again how my Toshiba had much better performance at much lower price point. ... may be the fact that they are actually the supplier of lcd panels to everyone else. ...

Wat ever be the reason. .. I truely feels toshiba had better performance. ... and yes while making the purchase I have compared it to all other tvs in the market. .. The decision stand good

Toshiba anytime.
Apart from very PQ and performance, i will shortlist its based on your requirements.

1) You dont need smart, then why are you paying extra in Sony for non-required thing ?
2) Toshiba plays 28 format directly from USB where Sony lacks few of them.

I have both Toshiba and Sony. IMO, Tosihba is Value for Money but Sony TVs have better Picture Quality. There could be lemons but this is the general thumb rule that I have.
If money is no bar, I would check the PQ of Sony to make the decision. Also, my Sony TV has been extremely reliable where as the older Toshiba 52" LCD that I had got dimmer over time.

Thanks to all folks.
Yes based on requirement as mentioned in my post earlier, i am sliding towards toshiba.
Yes picture quality i understand sony is better. Now that sony is offering 1year std warranty, (+2 years extended from sony).
One more - Even though sony gives less USB formats, i can do it with my media player. So that should be ok.

Still unable to arrive at a decision. :(

If you are going with Sony, then take the extended warranty as it might be very expensive to repair if there is a problem.

I can try to help you in decision making!

- If you are the kind of guy wanting to have the newest / latest and value for money then Toshiba it is
- If you are the one who will buy a gadget and have it till it dies or donate it to family / friends after very many several years then it is Sony

Hope it helps!

If you're looking at a Toshiba, consider the PU200. You can get a 40" model for about the same price and IMO, the backlit set is better and it has better sound (in case you don't have external speakers). The 32" model is not Full HD although for that size it doesn't matter much.

Thanks. Oh!! That narrows down further to Sony!!! Anyway i do see feedback's (read negative) about recent Sony lcd/led's. So now its a gamble which ever tv i go for (irrespective of taking extended warranty!!!)

Thanks. 40" is beyond my permissible view distance due to my space limitation. At the max i can go for 37" (if available). I understand Full HD will be useful above 40".

Dear sgmane,

I happen to have both Sony (37", discontinued now, bought in Diwali 2008) and a Toshiba (32", bought in Diwali 2011)LCD TVs.

The Sony developed a problem after the 1 yr warranty period was over. Sony initially quoted a LCD panel replacement at nearly 20k without any warranty on the replaced new panel. I then escalated the problem to the regional service manager, and asked why they did not offer any extended warranty on a TV which cost (at that time 60k). Any way after a couple of rounds of deliberation, the quote became 16k with all expenses paid incl of taxes with 6 month warranty on the new panel. Since then the set is working properly.

The Toshiba was bought at 20k only with 3 yr warranty, and running properly since the time of purchase.

My suggestions and remarks:

1. Whatever you buy, get one with 3 year warranty.

2. Picture quality of both TVs are comparable in HD and SD.

3. The audio of Sony is better (better be, it cost 60k compared to the Toshiba at 20k).

4. Both my TVs are HD ready. Difference matters only for TVs bigger than these sizes and at shorter than 10' distance.

5. Look for the convenient features like side ports, multiple HDMI ports, and USB connectivity and compatibility with different video formats. Ports at the back are useless if you are wall mounting.

Now if I have to buy a TV, I'd always go for a TV with reasonable (perhaps not the best) PQ, but the one which is cheaper and has more warranty. I believe, electronic gadgets like TV etc are not made these days to last for 10-15 years. It is better to buy something with more warranty period and cheaper models provided you are not seriously compromising with quality.

Regards.

Dear Sgmane,
I sold my Toshiba PT 200 32'' Last week for 27,000/- and you will be surprised to know that i bought that TV from Vijay Sales on 26/01/13 for 25,000/-.This is my best Tv I have used so far.for quality and price is concern, evrything is superb in Toshiba PT 200 & is full hd & support 28 usb format.
NOW, I bought sony kdl 42'' W 674A ,It's latest 2013 model & Lauched in May only at Malasia,Singapore, Thailand. (Almost similar to W650A,Is Indian Version of W674 series which needs wifi dongle for Connecting internate & This feature is included on W674A Built in wifi ready to use no need of dongle)
I sold Toshiba because i wanted 42''/ plus better quality of picture/better sound/Extra smart features.
If you don't want smart feature than go for Toshiba 32'' PT200, it has 3 Years warranty and reasonable price(Mrp Rs 35,990/- but you will get online arround Rs 27,500/- OR WAIT FOR 15TH AUGUST YOU WILL GET BEST OFFER FOR THIS TV.
Now comparing between Sony & Toshiba I must tell you that Sony is far better in quality & Great product, but that doesn't mean that Toshiba lack anything, for the price nobody can beat Toshiba PT 200 32''. Go for it you won't regret.
Hope this will help you...All the best...

Thanks again folks.
Any one who had connected external HDD to the USB of Sony W series (particulary W650A) and play videos, do let me know. Toshiba Pt200 supports upto 1TB HDD.
In other forums i read "sony w650A the screen hangs if i plugin video of pendrive more than 2gb" by a member. Need to check.

Can it take external HDD connection to view videos with limit of 1TB on sony w650A?

Yes, whatever i buy i gonna take 3yr warranty. Again, as said earlier, even i had seen sony reviews (read negative). Not to rule out, electronic items now does not have much quality as earlier.

I've recently got Toshiba 40PX200E from singapore (around 27k INR). I am yet to possess it (sitting in my native) and after 2 weeks i'll start using it and will give a review about it. I just went for Toshiba for its price/performance as I was looking at either of Toshiba/Pana/Sharp LED's and I've heard its easier with customs for these brands (against sony/samsung).

Thanks to all folks who replied. Got the PT200 at 34000 discounted price with some lucky draw coupons with std 3yr warranty (also offering 1yr extended dealer warranty which they said would cover the panel. I did not take it though!)! Sony - they did not reduce single rupee. MRP 42900 and no lucky draw coupons. (Sony showroom had MRP at 44,900 offer to give at 42900 though!!). Again extended warranty of 2yrs for additional amount. Almost 10K difference was huge to part with at this point of time.
Oops! i don't have photos. No camera!!!
