TT Custom Design Dust Covers

Have your fixed the hinges to it? Looks heavier than the standard technics dust cover, if the hinges are fixed, does it hold up?

If you are using the dust cover without hinges, you have to be extremely careful while removing it and placing it before and after play. I have noticed that most users with floating dust covers tend to knock the tonearm counterweight area with it, causing constant changes in alignment.

Good point Reuben. The original Technics cover is made of 3mm acrylic I guess. So 5mm is a bit heavier. I have not attached the hinges yet, however I feel the hinges should be able to take it.

I agree, one has to be extremely careful when removing covers that do not have hinges, as if you are causal the first thing you will knock is the tonearm, however I am extremely careful and in no hurry when I remove/close dust covers. I do not want any scratches as well :).

I will post my observations once I get the hinges fixed.

One another note - I have also used small hard plastic strips to cover the gaps near the pitch control and that really keeps away any dust from entering. That's a vulnerable area on 1200s. Plus one cannot see those strips directly unless looked at very closely.

Congratulations, this does look excellent. A couple of ideas occur to me...

Would these people do the same with mitred (45-degree) joins?

Would they round off the edges?

Thank you Thad.

With me talks with this Gentleman, I understood that he does far more complex jobs with acrylic. He is the master designer himself and his son following his footsteps.

Now, I told him the original technics dust cover comes with a slight bulge near the tonearm area, and he quickly suggested that he can do it but I let that pass as it required additional time.

I've seen a few of his project with miter joints, so indeed this will be possible. What are you specifically looking at?

Don't go to any trouble for me on this! I do not have a need: my deck still has its original cover, and I am unlikely to be changing the deck.

I was just giving ideas, prompted by your pics, as to how this might perhaps be made even better.

Congrats, Record Player! That's excellent work there. I've seen the work done by a few local Acrylic shops (the good ones), and I think the finishing on this has turned out really good.

SJ,

Did you try the lid on the TT hinges? Any good? Do they fit on well and operate easily, bearing in mind the new lid is heavy?

Hey Eddie - I've not tried the hinges yet. May take me a while before I get this done.

The dust cover for your 1200 is all set and just needs to be placed :).

Hope once the hinges are installed it holds.

Gents - Spoke to the gentleman today from Somya Creations. He mentioned that a few FMs from here contacted him for Custom Dust Covers. He had requested for the following when FMs call to place orders:

1. Please specify exact Dimensions for the dust cover (Inner or Outer Dimensions)
2. Otherwise, carry your turntable along and they will take down the exact dimensions
3. Delivery time will be about 8-10 days

Cheers...
