Turntables & Records for Beginners

Philips 242 is not a bad TT at all as mentioned by Reuben. The crackle sound you experience could be due to various reasons such as:-
Incorrect alignment
Bad quality record
Worn stylus
and many other factors.
If the record quality is bad, these pops and crackle noise will be there however good the TT is

I am so taken by the purity of the Vinyl listening experience that I have decided to purchase some new Vinyls of my favourite artists. Finding a source is an issue for me of course being the newcomer that I am. I have looked in other threads and am still looking, but any pointers by you all will help a lot.

Thank you for pointing these out, I am looking to get the 242 serviced, if not immediately then in near future. The place where I got it from (Metro Music Hall, it has been mentioned in one of the threads here, and also mentioned that the technicians today are not that knowledgeable and the 'care' factor is missing from their work, I also got the same impression while I was there) does not evoke a lot of confidence unfortunately, and so am looking for information on a good knowledgeable technician who will take good care of my TT in servicing and teach a thing or two in the process.

Thanks reuben once again, I have checked that thread. I bought 3 Vinyls from a roadside shop around there, have not yet been to Mashooq or Jamal's shop, will do soon hopefully.

On a different note, pardon my inquisitiveness but what exactly prompted you to reply at 4:18 am in the morning ?! :)

Actually I was up working and took a break to check out HFV, was on a global call.

IMHO, better be away from Mashooq/Jamal's shop. You'll get nothing special there that's not there with the other guys, albeit at a much cheaper price. High chances are there that you'll get ripped off. Stick to the guys you found on the main street and bargain hard(depending on the record condition).

Happy spinning,
Bhaskar

Think I've already mentioned this in the thread regarding Metro Music. For anything concerning audio systems pls contact this gentleman : Mr. Ashok Mondol : 9051445525. He is the rare breed of educated as well as honest technician whom you can fully rely on. There are many HFV members in Kolkata who can vouch for him.

Bhaskar

Yes, I went through your posts on the other thread, but still decided to go there anyway. One of the reason was that apart from Metro Music sources for turntable are hard to find. I am not sure about trusting the varied ads in olx and quikr, me being a novice it would be difficult for me to ascertain the quality of the TT by just looking at one. At least at the shop I could look at different available models before choosing one.
This 242 which I bought was in better shape than some others, visually it seemed so. Though I knew that I would get it serviced once I bought it. I did a quick search on my cell phone about the 242 and then decided to buy it.

Thanks for Mr. Ashok Mondol's contact details, I will give him a call soon when time permits.
