Hi friends,

I didn't know where to put this thread but since it is related to up scaling, I have put it here.

I am using viewsonic 22"LCD monitor to watch movies. My DVD player is connecetd to it through one "GADMEI" external TV tuner box. (I am not much worried about PQ. So I am happy with it).

I am not sure what is the resolution of a VCD or DVD (I guess it is 600x800). I can select gadmei output upto 1600X1050(which is the native resolution of my LCD).So whatever may be the input, the Gadmei output is fixed at 1600X1050

Now my question is whether the TV tuner is upscaling all DVD/VCD/TV signals to that resolution? Can this gadget of rs 1100 do such thing?

Hey jaudere,

VCD is 352x288 & DVD is 720x576, at 25 frames/second & 50Hz regions.
They're 352x240 & 720x480 in 30fps/60Hz regions like in the US.

AFAIK, if you're using a normal (not a scaling) LCD monitor, the only resolution that it can accept is its native resolution. So your little Gadmei box has no choice; it may not upscale well, but it has to summon the muscle to do the job.:D

I don't know whether my monitor has scaling facility or no. When attached to PC, it can show things at the resolution of 1024 X 768. So it may be a scaling monitor. It is viewsonic Vx 2235 WM. when fed with lower resolution than the native one, it shows message to shift to native resolution for best results.

I was having the same thing in mind when I built my HTPC - so that it can be a one-piece-fits-all-puzzles sort of solution. But even with the top end Hauppage TV tuner (bought from the US - because it was not locally available) I was disappointed with the picture quality. And the Hauppage drivers are pathetic. They finally managed to make me even grudgingly praise ASUS' drivers. Yes, that bad.

I will never again look for a PC TV Tuner card for recording purposes. I am still on the lookout for a DVR type solution. I had my eye on the PlayonDVR but it has been receiving consistently negative feedback.

The other interesting option that I still have in my sights is mybox. MyBox :: HD Media Player/Recorder, MyBox Digital Video Recorder (DVR), HDMI support NV 300, NV 300T (DVR with Tuner)

Who knows - I might still go for it!

I have a Viewsonic VX1940W and it says the same thing, which should mean that both our monitors recognize PC (D-Sub or DVI-I) input at non-native resolution and try to upscale to their native 1680x1050 accordingly.

But it seems to me that it would be better for the tuner box to do the upscaling to 1680x1050, because at least then there'd be a 1:1 pixel mapping between tuner and monitor. The tuner box would be mangling the signal from the DVD/STB input anyway, converting from composite (or component?) video to the D-Sub analog or DVI-I digital signal that your monitor accepts.

Which reminds me, I must check if my monitor is still alive. Haven't turned it on in months, been using my TV instead :)

I have a tuner lying around that upscales to 1024x768. Believe me you dont want to use one in a tuner as it is bound to be a very cheap implementation. I recall that the lines of a tennis court were jagged when upscaled. PQ was nothing to sing about.

Regards

Sing? More like scream :D

I agree that the PQ's pretty horrible with most tuner boxes I've seen, I've had a couple. But jaudere's only other option is to buy another tuner or DVR, and he's already mentioned that PQ's not that important to him in this case - his question was only academic.

yes. it was absolutely academic.because of my odd schedule, We start movie usually around 1 AM (after the kids sleep) and it goes on till 3:30 AM. That too once a month or so. At this time of day, we are happy even if we see faces which are recognizable. We do not have TV anymore. So I am happy with GADMEI. can't spend much on it.

Sometimes We see movie on comp ( connected through DVI out of the Nvidia Gforce GT 9400)> but it is so boring to handle controls of comp manually(no remote) that we prefer DVD player through TV tuner box.:)
