UPS for My receiver and other gadgets

I am back in Pune, my dealer out for lunch :P should get the rates soon. However an online dealer is offering the following prices before shipping.

Smart-UPS ? Lynx - The Audio , Electronics And Computer Online Store In India

I have that as well, if you are planning to run this UPS on Generator OR a non pure sine wave inverter, I would refrain from purchasing this product. APC Smart UPS is very genset sensitive and needs a pure sine wave at the receiving end. Strictly speaking this product is not for India. As I said I have this and it simply does not run properly on Genset nor on my simple home inverter (may be because its square wave). I had to buy a pure sine wave inverter which supplies main power to this UPS, when the power is out. On Genset it simply comes to batter every minute or so, very irritating.

On the other hand my Online UPS runs on every damm thing, it does not care what is running at the background, it takes all fluctuations and every input (sine non sine), genset, what ever and gives a solid 230V 24x7.

Sam, you are absolutely correct......The SUA series of APC is a line interactive series and will have problem with DG sets.....whereas Online UPS of any make will solve this problem.

@sam9 and @amit21 : so If i need the UPS to work with generator i need to purchase pure sine wave * online * UPS, normal Pure sine wave ups will not work, is that correct? Please let me know....thanks for your inputs

it depends on the waveform and and frequency stability of the generator. if very stable ( with varying loads) then not an issue.i had a honda 2800(2.2kw) genset and there used to be alot of relay chaattering in my sua 1000i(sinewave- line interactive), even if i keep the sensitivity at the lowest. tune the genset and also there might be a way to further decrease the sensitivity by tweaking the avr settings/ hysterisis through rs 232 port of the ups , if you plan to buy sua series then talk to the apc guys before purchase if you have a genset

So if i go for APC smart online UPS i don't have to worry about the generator issue? I live in a apartment and we have common generator. I really don't know about the quality of the power generated. So should stretch myself and go for a APC online UPS ?

I have personally used APC Smart UPS (SUA1500i) with my setup and in Faridabad where power situation is not that great either and I have also used it with our society Genset and never had any problem.
Now given it to our forum member Sumit who uses the same at his house in Meerut and that too with his Genset and he also never faced any problem.

yes, in online there is no chattering relays trying to correct voltage, so no such issue, but your apartment sized genset will be much better than my honda (i guess)

If you want to totally eliminate RF/EMI/Surges/Voltage fluctuations/Frequency variations, a mere sine wave and/or online UPS is of no use. What you need is an online double conversion UPS with an isolation transformer(s) with a high crest factor for dynamic load like a power amplifier. In my search for such an UPS, I was recommended APC SURT2000 or equivalent UPS for the purpose. The vendor who supplies UPS equipments to our Bank is 'Numeric Power Systems' and I was having discussion with their representative just an hour back and by strange coincidence, also saw this thread. He has quoted me 28K for a 2kva one and 20k for a 1kva one.

Thanks guys...sorry had a very busy weekend and was not able to get online....

@ ashishkesarwani your setup looks really great....mine is very small compared to yours. So for now I'm planning to go with APC Smart UPS (SUA1500i) , let me see how it works out. This will set me back by 14K. Most likely i will be getting it next week. Once setup is done will let you all know how its working out for me....

Thanks again to all for your inputs...

Exactly, that's is why I suggested to refrain from line interactive and opt Online UPS.

Just got the APC Smart UPS for 14k. The damn thing is heavy! Some pics and comparison with my old APC!

i have one...1.5 KV. The backup depends on the load. Low load higher backup. So calculate ur load and goe an appropriate UPS. Get it directly from the dealer, i got mine for 10K!! It has auto shutdown through ethernet. Can add an additional battery anytime. Requires a 15 amp outlet.

APC Back-UPS 1500VA, 230V, India

running my receiver alone it had come for at least 2 hours. PC alone has come for like at least 8 hours. It would have worked longer but the power came back. :D

...just noticed that u already got one :)

I need a power strip from UPS to connect my Wifi router, modem etc. And APC Smat UPS has all C14 (power jack) outs.

Does anyone brought a power strip which can be connected to C14 Power Jack.

What kva? What is the exact model number, please? They are very heavy, due to lead-acid batteries. I used to work with one that took up most of a room, and required the floor to be strengthened. The servers it supported were tiny by comparison!

I have the same, with the add-on battery pack. It will run my PC+monitor+desk-lamp for 2-hrs-plus. The PC shutdown is actually by USB, not ethernet.

How are you getting eight hours? Laptop?
