Hi Guys,

Just bought a Samsung D5000 LED TV, need to buy a stabilizer, was wondering if I could just buy a UPS instead of a Stabilizer as the price is same and I can use it as a backup .. when power goes off.. But is a UPS as good as a stabilizer ??

Is it a good move ?

Need your expert advice

Hi,

As far as I know, UPS is for Uninterrupted Power Supply and Stabilizer is to stabilze the voltage to your appliances. If you want your apliances to be protected from damages due to voltage fluctuations, I think you should go for a stabilzer...

Thanks

If you bascially won't to protect your tv from voltage fluctuation get a stabilizer.
While a UPS will also stabilize its not as effective as good stabilizers like V-guard Crystal.
A online UPS on the other hand will be much better, buts is very expensive.

if you buy a top tier branded ups it will offer better protection than normal stabiliser.I am not sure how you can get stabiliser and ups at same price though. a line interactive ups has got the AVR(automatic voltage regulator) and good designs offer faster voltage correction speed,(beacuse the ups need to ensure the computer doesnot reeboot during a brownout) and also will have a line filter/ mov based spike suppressor

we have lot of volage flactuations as well as powercuts in our area during summertime,..so what would be required more UPS(Good ones like APC) or voltage stabilizer(lke vgaurd) or combination of both..going for 51"plasma as next tv which requires lot of power!

So confused what would be a sound investment for safe power?

I am using APC UPS since last 3 yrs and do not have any voltage problem. Once there was some problem in our area where most of the houses electronic items got bust, but non at my house. I had experienced other UPS at my neighbors and relatives house, but APC is better in load (some time we run mixers also) and they have got a good service system.:yahoo:

If you are having constant voltage fluctuations, then opt for an online ups or servo or constant voltage transformer (CVT). Otherwise you can go for an offline ups from companies like apc.

I have a APC Smart Ups which costs 11k and it does AVR only if the incoming voltage goes below 200v and above 250v.
So because of this i use it along with a V-guard digi series stabilizer which won't allow the output voltage to go above 240v.

A UPS will serve your purpose best. I am using the same Samsung LED and am using with my 3 year old Microtek 800VA double battery UPS which has inbuilt AVR, Spike Suppressor and high and low cut off and it takes the load of my entire digital setup. If you have extra cash then go for APC otherwise Microtek will suffice. A Voltage Stabilizer is recommended only in places with very few power cuts and stable power supply.

Thanks a Ton guys.. for your valuable feedback.. How long does the LED last on a Normal UPS ? 30 min ?

It depends on the battery capacity of the UPS,size of tv and backlight setting.
In a cheap APC 500VA ups with a 7ah battery you can get around 30+min on a 32" led-lcd,you can also get the same run time on a 40" LED provided its in eco mode/power saving mode.

Hi,

UPS 650 VA cannot give you backup for long its just switch off your TV when there is power cut hardly you can use for few minutes depending on the TV power ratings.

If you want go for UPS then go UPS and Stabilizer both or sterilizer alone.Stabilizer protects from any high surges and change in voltage. You can buy little higher capacity sterilizer connect all your AV components through this.

Capacity you may need to calculate total power consumption of all equipments.
Some of our members are using Servo stabilizers.

You can go through this thread discussed in detail.

Raghu - I am looking to buy UPS. But I held back by the C14 Plug that I need to have to connect to the UPS output sockets.

Can you help me with how I can get the IEC C14 power cards for the APC Smart UPS in bangalore.

Reviving this thread as i have a related query. Can i connect a v guard stabiliser to a inverter when using 24 inch LED TV as there is lot of fluctuation in summer where the tv is installed?

what i want to know is that whether there would be any adverse effect on inverter(800VA) because of stabiliser in the chain

IIRC, the general opinion is that it would be better to use a servo stabilizer in front of the inverter rather than a plain old stabilizer as the input to an inverter. If the inverter does not auto voltage regulate as it appears to be from your post, perhaps you could connect the stabilizer in between the inverter and the TV.

There are several threads on this topic, do a search to see what FM's think.

I tried to search bur could not find a proper thread/post. perhaps another round of searching.

By the way the chain is inverter>stabiliser>TV. The purpose is to use inverter as a power source when the main current goes off.

What u mean is that If the inverter has AVR then Stabiliser become superfluous. Of couse assuming that the power is always routed though inverter even when MAINS power supply is coming.

From what I recall, this is OK or maybe not, see this post:

Correct. Most inverters however don't do AVR even though many inverter manufacturers claim that their products do AVR "within limits".

An online true sine-wave UPS is the best option, followed by servo fed line-interactive sine-wave UPS else sine-wave UPS with stabilizer/surge protector and finally non sine-wave inverters passed through a stabilizer/surge protector. Cost decreases with the protection/backup methods.

I discussed my issue of whether I should go for stabiliser in between my 24 inch LED and the non sine wave Inverter with the V Guard service centre in Delhi. They advised that sine wave inverter can be used safely with V Guard stabiliser although non sine wave stabiliser may also work. But since I didnot have the option of changing non sine wave inverter at this point as it was bought about a year back, i took the risk and bought V Guard mini crystal stabiliser for TV.

The TV is located in Ghaziabad side which has power cuts of 8-10 hours in peak summer and the the TV is working fine when connected like this permanently
Mains power supply > inverter >voltage stabiliser >TV and STB(Local cable)

This has worked fine since my last post in this thread:):).

I am also looking for a good UPS to protect my AVR and other gadgets, max load 1KVA, can i go for this model APC BR1500G-IN
