This is something thats been going on in my mind ever since I connected my 300x2w rms 6ohm 93 sensitivity jamo towers to my 1997 sony hifi GR-8 system which was specified 1500w pmpo but 90x2w rms fronts @ 8ohms and the thing drove it fine at low volumes. There was an inherant coloration of the sound which I assumed was the shittiness of the unit itself.

But if I ignore the coloration, was there any actual risk in using a mini hifi / htib amp to drive high sensitivity towers?

Lets take for example

Archived DAV-DZ570 : DVD Home Theatre System : Home Theatre System : Sony India

Just another htib, god knows what it sounds like but it specifies 140x in each channel, and from what I remember of seeing a sony speaker from htib sets at a store they were rated 3 ohms.

I dont know if the speakers are driven from the controller or the sub, but regardless, suppose I had to run my same towers on this htib worth some odd 14k, what will exactly be the fallout?

I dont know what kind of amp is on the htib sony.
I dont know what kind of connecter the htib amp/sub uses to drive its own fronts.

Basically, whats your take. I dont want it to become "you should buy something better like onk or philips discussion, I just want to understand whats the drawbacks to using an htib to drive non specified speakers which are around 90db sensitivity and the htib specifies 100watt+ on each channel ( which I dont think is accurate ).

I see, is this something thats generally applied across most htib's ? What does output filter do exactly?

Also, the nasty hf frequencies/damage, would this also happen if the unit was driven at low volumes or only high?

Hmm, I see.

In that case, what if an htib had speakers which had multi range drivers and not shitty full range ones like on the sony. Would that decrease the risk of damaging the tweeters ( the rist will obviously still be there, also what about the woofers risk? )

Haha I'm glad, its kind of ironic I was actually thinking "only cranky" can answer this one and youve even had hands on experience with sony so thats quite cool :D

I'm happy I never went in for sony htibs. My family has been with a pair of 70's philips hi Q 8" full ranges and aplituner LH-718 for majority of our years even after getting the micro hifi sony in 1997. Nothing seems to sound as nice as those oldies even though it's probably full of chaotic internal hardware.

Anyway thanks for your help :D +0.3% permanent knowledge :D
