Hey everyone!

This is Anand from Chennai, India. Ive been reading from this website for quite sometime and after reading for about three months on and off now i decided to get myself a basic sound setup for my 10 by 10 living/bed room. So long story short i bought the app for about 250 bucks just to read more off this forum and prepare myself for the purchase.

I am the kind of person whos really loves to experiment and enjoy witn different audio settings and really enjoy clarity of the instruments involved in songs that i find people around me hardly noticing. So i am not sure if that qualifies me as an audiophile or not, but yeah... thats that.
About me :
I like listening to songs in tamil tht tend to have a strong melody base , typical tamil carnatic based fusion songs, enjoys well orchestrated carnatic music songs, especially the ones by TM krishna, Sudha , mandolin srinivas, ravikirans,
Huge fan of rehman, shankar tucker, ilayaraja, vidyasagar.

Not very exposed to english songs but have slowly started liking some covr songs by boyce avenue, bep, john mayer, adele, maroon 5 etc.
Used to be in a state where i thought buying sony was the ultimate experience i could get until i realized there may be still so much more to audio experience.i guess ive been like one of those frogs inside a "well" thinking theres no world outside of the well.

My goal : to setup a good sounding system at home. A system that can if not immediately but later on scale into a good sounding system that lets me enjoy deep bass from Ghatam nd ganjeera recordings in live carnatic kutcheri, to gentle strings section in songs like live recording of hotel california by eagles , maroon 5 etc.

I have just started off visitng shops auditioning avr mostly seen yamaha so far. I guess Im gonna be auditioning the speakers after i narrow down on my avr... I guess i still have a long way to go... Lots to read! Lots to be saved to spend too!

Hi anand...welcome aboard....glad to have one more crazy sailor in this beautiful ship..he he...its wonderful to know that you are reading a lot before making the plunge...though I do feel, since your priority is mostly listening to music with good sound staging , you should consider going in for a good stereo set up than an avr...do mention your budget and Im sure members here will guide you through to your destination.
cheers mate

Hello Anand,
Welcome to Hifivision:)
You have definitely landed in the right place. What you say is true and it happens to us folks all the time.:D
For your room size a good bookshelf speaker will be ideal so do audition them.
You have lots of options from Indian and foreign brands & prices to suit every pocket.
Enjoy & have fun ;)

@ ganesh,

Id like to know if there are any decent avr that you can recommend for me..... I kinda like the features and concepts that yamaha seems to have developed like compressed music enhancer. Let me know what you think of yamaha... I am also open to other suggestions too

Hi Anand
decide well before making the plunge..is it an avr that you want or a stereo setup...If its going to be an avr..then budget is something that Ive asked you already..marantz, denon, yamaha ...all of them have good avr s that you can go for..Hifivision itself has put many offer sales for marantz avr s....go through tham and make a call that suits your budget...remember u also need to plan for a suitable speaker package...
cheers
ganesh.

Thanks Ganesh! The Talkatap app seems to have some bug that cuts and posts only my first paragraph of my replies! My apoligies!

I am quite convinced with your suggestion that it makes more sense for me to go for stereo setup rather than a AVR setup. So Big Thanks for that! :)
So here goes...

Budget :
25k(max) for amp + 10 to 20k for Bookshelf speakers - Ready to extend about 5k if its really worth. Don't mind saving up and buying if its really upto my expectations

Place:
Kelambakkam, Chennai, India.

Room Size:
10x10

Source :
Mostly from my laptop via 3.5 mm cables or Ipad(will probably get Belkin's bluetooth reciever to pair) or

Music Selection :
* ARR , Yuvan, Ilayaraja Songs
* unplugged HD version songs off youtube like the ones by "Boyce Avenue", "Shankar tucker"(Huge Fan BTW!!!)
* Unplugged MTV songs may be....
* English Pop songs sometimes too
* Listen to radio (probably feed it through 3.5mm to banana split cables to the amp)

Plan:
To get Amp with bookshelves to have a bareminimal setup.

Clarification:
Lets say i get the above mentioned setup, am i missing any of the prerequisites? Like do i require a DAC to feed proper sound to the amp?

If i say i am going to provide input from a laptop / phone/ipad via good audio connectors to the amp, would it be good enough? If this setup end up giving some All in one speaker package like the ones we get from Sony and Creative for like 5k, then it makes no sense i guess.

Starting off with :
So i am thinking of Auditioning an A-s500 by Yamaha @ Vipul's in Kilpauk since I stumble something about that place every now and then in this forum. Also ppl seem to think they generally have the speakers that would go with the same like Wharfdale, Polk Audio RTIA3 etc.
Gonnabe checking out :
1. Vipul Audio Tech , Kilpauk, Chennai
2. Yamaha Showroom @ Sterling Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai [An eyeopener to all of this for me:) ]
