Hey guys, looking for a VFM Blu-Ray player that's not region locked. I've got a PS3 at the moment, but I don't want to be restricted by regions.

If there's a cheap region free Blu-Ray player out there, I'd like to invest in it. Was planning on picking up another multi-region DVD player anyway, figured I might as well upgrade.

Open to all your suggestions.

If you must know, my budget is around 6K +/- 1K

Or are they more expensive? :\

TIA!

Sherwood will fall in your budget, that too the price will swing like itz performance:)

If you increase your budget more than 12 to 15K, suggestion will come.:)

12K - 15K for a multi region BD Player? That's insane! I'd rather stick to buying Region C / Multi Region Blu Rays and invest the 15K in more Blu Rays! =D

What about all those Onida's, Panasonics and Sony's that can change regions temporarily using some sort of remote code, etc.?

Try those onida's it will play"chappathi's" too... Every low end manufacturer will lack in releasing updated firmare which you will make your head spin like disc:p instead of disc spinning. Only old BD's can be played with out firware updating which shall not be considered as future proof( future is only at least next 2 years)

For the time being - if you have a laptop with HDMI out & dont mind hooking that up to play the blu-ray that you PS3 cant play, you could consider buying a Blu-ray drive for that. Am sure something should be available for <4k range ?

Am in the same boat as you, mostly buy region-free blu-rays, but at times when i rent them which dont happen to be region-free blu-ray, use my laptop blu-ray disc with HDMI out on it to play them (connect it to AVR).

I think you are technically correct. I am also exploring the options. I know the best bet is OPPO 93. What I found is the following

The best possibility of buying A+B+C,1+2+3+4+5 BDPs is from 220 electronics, though their price is same as in ebay US. Now take any player, for instance LG BD 630, its street price in US is $128 (I personally saw it in Denver walmart last week). 220 electronics is charging an whopping extra $100 for the modified player. Actually this happens for all most all available players with some are ridiculously overpriced. I think $100 mod is justified for a player like OPPO 93 or 95, but then the basic model is really costly (comes around 37K + customs).

Suppose if one is ready to spend up to 20K then what are the options? obviously we are all concerned about VFM products, otherwise I know there are plenty in ebay Global India under 20K, but they are all overpriced. My view is a hardware modification kit for a player (<$250) should not cost more than $40. What I am missing?

give suggestions, need to finalize quick.
BTW I was in Chicago O'Hare, miles away from 220 electronics showroom, but could not squeeze out time as I had to catch another flight within 3/4 hours and thanks to the insane immigration line that took me more than 2 hours to enter US. Oh! forgot to mention, checked thoroughly Denver Walmart BD section, BEN HUR region 1 steel book was on sale for $15, overall it was below par, some indian shops are better than that.

I know you're replying to my posts, but I can't make any sense of your statements. I don't see any brand and/or model recommendations.

Please be more specific with your qualms and recommendations.

Are you TRYING to tell me that the BD players that can be hacked temporarily cannot be updated?

I read on another forum that this is not the case any more.

If you are considering spending so much money, also consider the option of buying cheap blu ray players from each region at about $60 each.

e.g. LG BD611 Blu-ray Disc / DVD Player | eBay

we have to consider the space constraint, but not a bad idea overall, also the AVR / TV must have so many available free HDMI inputs

Thanks, that's a superb idea! However, it's going to cost me twice as much if I include shipping.

Considering I already have a PS3, I'll just need to pick up 2 more BD Players. If only I could find a cheap bunch locally, it'd be awesome.

I would suggest never ever go for Sherwood...I am really disappointed with Sherwood...When ever i play Sherwood my head starts spinning....And even more disappointed with the person who sold me Sherwood here.....

If any of the electronics gurus can point out some service guys in bangalore, it would be really helpful.....the thing is that person who sold me is a hifivision member who is absconding after the sale....I am pissed off with the integrity of the said person.....I have tried to contact the person n number of times and there is no reply...After the sale he told me he has a hardware guy who can fix this problem...I wish i hadnt bought this peace of shit.....

Jailbreak your PS3 and make it region free!! You can do it by a simple software hack without any need for hardware mod!! Dont need to pay a cent !!!

i dont have a ps3 but jailbreaking a ps3 is very easy and there are tons of info on that on net. After Geohotz released its secret key to sign in homebrew apps there is no way for sony to patch it. Just google it and you will get info :)
