hello,
I want to purchase a a new led/plasma tv my budget is around 40k. I stay in bangalore. MY main priority is
1.the tv should last for atleast 8 years(i'm not concerned what the manufacturer claims, beacuse they hype about the life of the tv)
2.full hd tv.
I am ready to extend my budget to another 5k if i am going to get a better model/tv.
Please suggest me various models that have really long life and its servicing is better.

Present flat panel HDTVs won't last more than the no. of years mentioned in the warranty card. If they last beyond the warranty period then its your complete good luck. Experts will clarify this better.
Tell us your room size & ambient light condition before we can suggest you any TV.

I dont agree with your statement that hdtvs last only a couple of years. I feel lcd /led tv dont last that long due to defects in their panels! here it depends on each manufactures! Sony tvs tend to outlast Samsung models, dont know if the newer mid range Samsung ones are better build. my friends 7 year old sony lcd tv is still going strong!

But i haven't heard about plasma tvs going kaput in a couple of years! maybe the tech is better or there are not many people owning one to report a failure but if you search some US or uk sites plasma tvs last longer than lcd, their panels dont get spoilt so soon!
i too was worried about how long a hdtv would last,so decided on a plasma tv mainly because of the PQ and it is ,according to what i have read, more reliable tan a lcd/led edge lit tv!

some more knowledgeable and senior hifians may be more helpful, coz i dont own one! will be buying my first hdtv next week:D

my room size is 14 by 12 ft.
The location where i have my existing tv has tubelight to its right side, whereas to the left side of the tv is not having any lighting(it is having a wall).
I watch the tv at 14 ft away from it.please suggest which model/brand and what size should i go for?

If you are watching from 14', i think you must go for at least 40" set. 46" would be better, but I doubt you will get a good model in 46"/47" for 40k. As you don't have a light or window right opposite your TV location you can opt for Plasma- it will be cheaper than LCD/LED for the same size and the movie watching experience will be better.

Check out the new Panasonic LCD/Plasma TVs- they have got some good reviews lately and you also have the option of taking an extended 3 yr warranty. Here: Flipkart: Panasonic 42 Inches Full HD LCD TH-L42U30D: Television
(just for reference- you might get a better deal at your local dealer)

cheers.

which plasma tv you are going to purchase next week

mostly the samsung PS51d490. if that doesn't materialize then it will be the PS43d490. The PS43d490 retails for about 39k in Bangalore i think.its not a full hd tv though, but its a 3d one, there is one which doesn't have 3d, cheaper though!.For your room you will need a 40 inch but getting anything bigger than 40 in the price range of 40 to 45k is very difficult! maybe you can wait till the 2012 samsung models are launched, somewhere by April, June??. by then dealers will try to clear their stock so expect great prices!

No Flat panel HDTVs will last like the good old CRTs just because of the build quality. You have got some examples of long lasting LCD/LEDs whereas I have some bitter experience on LCD/LEDs. One of my friend's samsung LCD got kaput within just 6 months and another in 4 yrs.
Actually CRTs had the single layer PCBs which were easy to repair but these new HDTVs have multi-layered PCB which can't be repaired easily and there lies the problem, if your warranty is over and your TV shows any problem then it will gonna hurt your wallet badly. So more the warranty safer you. ;)

If your viewing distance is more than 10' then you should go for atleast 42" TV and you can have Plasmas in your options coz Plasma panels starts from 42".
Panasonic and Samsung are good brands in plasma, don't go for LG.
Pana provides 3 yrs warranty whereas Samsung provides only 1 yr and I personally prefer Pana over Sammy for natural picture quality.
But you do audition both brands and then decide.

Do panasonic offer free replacement or servicing(during the 3 year warranty period)in case of any manufacturing defect in the product.

most companies will offer to repair first if its possible. but in case of flat panel televisions there are very few "repairable" parts, hence for most major defects in manufacturing they will replace the part or the TV itself.

cheers

comparing samsung and panasonic who offer better service in india. can u elobaorate

have no experience in servicing flat panel TVs :p so no idea about maintenance costs either.

just had a very bad experience with samsung lcd and their service, so surely will not suggest you to go for samsung plasma or lcd. have heard good reviews about panasonic plasmas and don't think any one on this forum has had a bad experience with panasonic.

but of course the final decision is up to you and your eyes...buy the one that appeals to you most visually...

I fully agree with you nindo.
Chungs if you want yourself to be on safer side then you should go for panny plasma (provided the PQ of panny plasma pleases you).

but some people here have quoted that panasonic india offers less support even during warratny period when compared to samsung

Yes, may be. But in terms of PQ Panasonic plasmas are considered to be among the best out there. I had auditioned a demo piece of 50VT20 some time back and found it to be fabulous. Only problem being the reflection on the panel, which is quite common for Plasma displays. In dark rooms its just amazing.

There are many owners of VT20 and V20 on this forum and am sure they are ready to swear by its PQ.!

cheers
