When is the best time to buy a TV in India? Is there a period when new models arrive? A salesman told me that new models usually arrive in May. Is this correct?

New models generally start arriving from April onwards. So they are costly. At the same time, old but good models are being phased out. Now, it is quite possible that between the old and the new, there are difference which do not really matter. For example, the difference could be pure physical - small/thin bezel, thinner panel, etc. Or there could be additional features that may not matter - such as built-in wifi or web camera. Now on the later, web camera, people may start a debate - how does it not matter? But if one considers the actual usage, the utility will be evident. But most of all, between new models and old models have some technical features that are added to the former. For instance, a feature that was available on the higher end model last year may be available in the new (lesser) model this year. New model introduction means that the outgoing model is now available at a heavy discount, especially if large stock is still unsold.

One should strike a close look at everything - sometimes the old model at discounted rate makes a lot of sense.

So that brings to the question - when is it the best time to buy? I believe that there is no good time or bad time. Best time is when you are absolutely ready. Consider the famed ST50 of 2012. People waited to buy during Diwali expecting deals or group buy discounts. What really happened was that by October, all stock had diminished and by November it was nada. I myself waited for 2 years and then decided now or never. It is a big myth that heavy discounts are available in festival times. What actually happens is that the deal is made to look that way by offering bundles of non-moving products such as BDP, HTiB, Hungama vouchers, etc. Only sometimes there is a real deal such as the slashing of Samsung 51E8000 prices by nearly 40% - but now we all know that it was to get rid of stocks since the model was discontinued.

But all said and done, best time to buy:

- outgoing models: May/June/July - when old stock is still available at heavy discounts
- new models: Sep/Oct/Nov - when new models have stabilized, you have had chances to look at reviews and prices have reduced a bit

When you are looking at particular model and any first famous online stores start showing out of stock / discontinued..catch you local dealer ASAP to get hold of it at heavy discount.

Applicable for all brands - but more relevant for Panasonic Plasma.

In a very simple way Id say if youre in the market then you dont have to wait for time just go and compare your preferred models with each other and pick anyone you like most. Secondly if youre concerned about newer models then I refer to @just4kix's post above, since it might take time or maybe you wont notice the major changes in them.

So if you can wait then Id recommend the new 2013 models, else just search presently available models and shortlist one of them.
