I want to get hold of a decent NAS enclosure. However most reputed online retailers dont really have it in their inventory. Flipkart doesnt have it, neither does Infibeam. The only ones having NAS devices are the obscure ones on junglee.com and the ebay. The thing with ebay of course is that one can never be sure if its a genuine Indian product (i.e. with Indian power adapter, warranty issues etc.).

Where have you guys bought your NAS enclosure from? Thanks.

There is another recent thread that I started a few weeks ago that has a lot of good information on this.

Look at these

Buffalo LS-QVL/E Network Attached Storage, Compare and Buy latest NAS Devices Online in India: bitFang.com

I am right now planning to get NAS box to replace my DIY NAS PC.

I had hell of a time in explaining(including giving the spelling) what is NAS box to local vendors? I was looking for synology DS-413J and best price i could get locally is only Rs.29500/- which is inclusive all taxes, VAT, octroi etc., I may go for amazon route.

I started with my DLink DNS 323 bought from US, power supply was repaired once in the first year but there after it ran too good with local repair for another 2 years until now that I upgraded to a DIY NAS, may be will put my old DND 323 running still fine for sale after some time.

I would recommend that go for DIY NAS, will get lots of flexibility. Synology products are very good I have heard and even on this forum you will find a comprehensive review from sam9s http://www.hifivision.com/home-thea...next-nas-project-powered-synology-ds413j.html on one of the synology products. In lower range you will find DLink, Buffalo, Netgear, iOmega, etc.

If you are looking for transforming your existing USB drives to Networked storage then you can also consider one of these

IOMEGA ICONNECT 4 USB DEVICE INTO WIFI INET Data STATION | eBay

If transforming existing usb devices to networked storage why not get a Pogogplug . Its only 2200 on ibhejo . pogoplug has 4 usb ports so same as IOMEGA ICONNECT . IOMEGA ICONNECT has wifi also .

I am using Syonlogy DS212J for last two months and extremely happy with it. I got it from US and the cost was 11K without disks.

I am using it for:

1. Squeezebox server serving to two Squeezeboxs.
2. DLNA for movies to TV and PS3.
3. Streaming music from home to office.

I would highly recommend this device.

Thanks

_Rahul.

Am I correct in understanding how this works: I can plug four external HDD drives into this device via USB and then plug the device into my comp/music server via a USB input, which will then recognize these four drives as one seamless drive? Sounds perfect for me.

No I think this Pogoplug device runs on Linux so it itself is a computer but headless. There is an advantage of this device as it can be turned into a squeezebox server with a custom OS as per the audiocircle forum. It comes default with Linux so you need to just connect external HDD thru USB and it has a LAN port so connect to your router and you are good to go for a minimalistic NAS server which runs on least power.

even I tried picking one up locally .. but couldnt find it anywhere .. the Synology dealer from Mumbai whom I spoke to was surprised that I wanted a NAS for home .. he said he'll get back to me with best prices immdtly and that was 5 months back !!

I lost patience and got a Synology DS413j from Australia .. a cousin carried it for me :) costed me 22k.

The main problem of a boxed NAS I think is expandability. For those who download a lot (those big 3D ISOs) and have possibility to run out their space say within a year's time then they do not have any option but to either buy a new boxed NAs once again or upgrade the size of existing drives, but what will you do with the existing drives? On the other hand having a DIY (PC based) NAS ensures that even if you run out of space and SATA ports then you can add pcie RAID cards to bring more SATA ports and add more drives, so you get a substantial time to utilize the proper lifespan of all your old HDDs and replace them only after some considerable time. Also DIY route gives the same at half the price of a boxed NAS so that you can spend more on the drives than on the box.

Btw, TheITDepot has now started stocking WD Red NAS Hard Drives. Whether you are going for boxed or diy nas, better check these out.

The Indian distributor for Buffalo was very responsive. I contacted him through his website. I got a very reasonable price for an enclosure that would take 4x2 TB drives.

want to sell my extremer E trayz NAs - Mint condition - Never Used - Bought from FM who never used it..

sorry didnt check the thread earlier
You can connect 4 usb external drives to pogoplug then connect it to your router LAN port or computer LAN port . Then all 4 drives will be available on your network . Whether your router is having internet or not is separate . If you have internet in your home network then you can even access them from anywhere in world .

Thats the default mode/usage

If you put Linux as OS on it then its a mini headless linux PC . It can do anything what linux can do like media server , act as access point , share your internet etc etc . Its just like you are running ubuntu on a PC with difference that its headless , no display . Even display can be added but it takes lots of resources

There are 2 ways of putting linux
first debian Run Linux on your Dockstar, GoFlex, or Pogoplug NAS
second archlinux Pogoplug v2 (Pink/Gray) | Arch Linux ARM

They are good time pass and fun to play with . A pc with 1.2GHz processor , 256 MB RAM and gigabit Ethernet
