Hi guys,

I am thinking of using wooden horn for my Altec HF duties, whether there will be worn out issue will be there in day by day use ?

Since plastic and metal will not worn out by passing sound or moisture, whether wooden horns will suffice.

Yours views are solicited funnily or sarcastically which will help me to decide. I will take it with due respect.:)

Srini, you are better off using Fibre glass horns than the wooden ones mainly due to higher cost of the wooden ones but if you are one smitten by the looks of wood, then don't look any further.

Hi,

Srini, if you get the wooden horns, you should coat them with snake oil to prevent wear and tear.

However I understand that the method of application is most important. It cannot be sprayed, brushed ,applied by hand or any other known means.

Hopefully there is someone out there who can help you get the snake oil on to the wooden horns.

Regards
Rajiv

Rajiv Sir,

You are telling this sarcastically or genuine ?.. However you seems to be toning in a different way like my metal horn with more push up of HF amplification.

Also polishing or staining of surface will makes any difference ? whether sound will come like silky smooth ?

Very "Honey" discussion ... also Snake , Oil ,method of application .. double meaning words !!

Wow! Wooden Horns are "high maintenance" :D

Capt,
Fibre Horns can look good and can be treated too. I used my homebrew concoction - 3 parts snakeoil and 1 part lipstick on horns:licklips:

PS: Although the concoction is home brewn, this is not to be tried at home. I comissioned a snake charmer who helped apply the concoction using his snake.

Same here Srini and guess what, I'm without a system for about 2+ months now. On the up side, I'm truly enjoying the pleasant termperate climes of Thiruvananthapuram.

How did you apply the lipstick?
I had mentioned it briefly in my previous post. Have quoted it again for your reference :)

You were right, even for fibre horns the treatment cannot be be sprayed, brushed ,applied by hand or any other known means. But nothing propreitory about it, I took notes to share with our HFV brethren.

The snakecharmer, known as Goldie (fondly called so by audiophiles as he has Golden-ears) carefully applies lipstick to the "special snake". The snake then squirts the concoction uniformly onto the horns from the listening chair. Trust me, I was amazed by this entire act. I ain't kidding, my listening chair is atleast 14ft from the speakers and the "trained" snake coated the horns with such uniformity that not even a single drop fell on my precious Altec drivers.

Note: Apparently this treatment only works on horns, treatment for drivers, cables, power-conditioners is a different story.

Reuben: We'll do anything to achieve good sound, won't we? :ohyeah:

Hello guys,

Please stick onto the thread topic side by side....

I never imagined my "horn" issue will pushup your amplification limit into too much.

Still expecting some real inputs.

I dont know how Captn, is spreading his imagination like Indian border..:p

Looks cool and should sound good too.

I may need help on HF & snake oil only..;)

I have 802D driver and currently have two horns of metal and fibre in hand but with different throat tried without any cross over and not happy with those results.

In the process of making of cross over based on Jelabs and also on parallel path of trying over with digital cross over minidsp. So it should be accomplished in another 10 to 15 days. So have to decide over horn upgrade...;)

If you have access to MiniDsp, its a good tool to get some proper curves. You have to play with it to get the result right.

You have single horn + driver or a pair of each ?

Kanwar

Have you used minidsp personally? I'm also thinking of getting hold of one for my Altecs, later this year. Its both highly regarded and affordable, as well as apparently pretty sophisticated with all kinds of capabilities. A friend here in Bangalore uses it for room correction, need to go and check it out.
