Which Plasma? Panasonic ST30 or Samsung E550? - A final Call.

Is your room too bright or direct sunlight falling through windows? Please put some pics if possible as it will help others to advice you and also buyers learn from you...

Yes it is bright especially in the mornings as I have sun rise coming right through the windows but this is temporary. It is still quite bright post sun rise too. I have curtains in place to cut out some light if not all of it. Will post pictures.

I am more or less settled on 50ST50D. I am taking the plunge in a day or two after checking prices at all places.

Congrats...after my 76k on my 46incher lasted only 3 yrs....want to restrict myself to 75k this time around. these may look like once in lifetime decisions....except it may end up as once ion 3-4 yrs!

WoW - its my dream machine, the best one can buy for ~100K, looking forward to your purchase and reviews...:clapping:

Since my budget is 65K types, my choices are LG 50PA6500 or Panasonic 50X/XT50 or even 50UT50 if I can get it for <75K...

My attitude is as follows:

Option A) Buy the best you can; if money is a problem, save today and postpone purchase and buy when you can; be sure on what you will buy and promise yourself that you will not be tempted with an upgrade/better model in two/three years; stick to your gadget for at least 5/6 years (breakdowns will be unfortunate and can't be helped)

Option B) Do not buy the top; go for the bottom; an entry level type (???? ??????? ???); a spend that you may not regret later when you are comfy enough to upgrade later

My advice to both of you:

arnprasad: You have suffered a big loss recently. Unless you are well off, try to minimize the loss. Check for a 2nd hand option. There are many people who are looking to upgrade to a higher size. Perhaps you may hit on a good bargain on a 40" for as little as 5-10K. Check with shops also. Or you can think for a smaller size for now. I am not saying that Samsung 51E550 is bad; in fact it is a very good model. But if you are buying that because of a financial compromise, then don't. You will always be bugged with "what if?" later.

rajatk: More or less same advice. If your heart is set on ST50, then no matter how good the TV you buy now, you will never like it and will always say to yourself "why didn't I wait?". So save now and buy later. Next year you may get an ST70 (or whatever model is introduced) for 1 lac or ST50 for 80-85k.

Thanks Just4kix. Like I have been saying - I am no videophile - and I dont play reference material. So I just need a big size TV with decent specs. I want to buy Panasonic models like UT50 but no one knows when they will be released. I checked all major retailers in Blore.

In fact just coming from Reliance Digital and he too quotes 78K for E550.

Also since Samsung is #1 I am hoping its more easier to get easier to get service from then than Panasonic as I seriously doubt if they sell anyway even close to the big 3 in India.

Also certain practical decisions like cost of 3D glasses - with my 5 and 6 year olds I am sure they will break a glass every few months and I cannot afford 3.5-4K glasses from panasonic. On Amazon I have seen Samsung glasses for less than 10 dollars each.

I think that E550 was price at 74K or below before the free BD package offer. They increased the price (probably across the board) and bundled the BD package to make it attractive. My own guess is that blu-ray players are not selling in India because:

a) general people are not too much concerned about blu-ray
b) most people download stuff and since TV can play off the USB, BDP does not make sense.
c) the people who would purchase BDP's don't do it because of Region locking and no hope of modding it
d) Videophiles are getting OPPO's and what not

If the price is not budging then you should take the plunge. 4K is not too great over 74k.

Thanks mate for the advice. Let me fill in some details here. I have never seen ST50 anywhere & my love for it is purely based on reviews and features. :clapping: Also note that I have never used a plasma and am upgrading from 32" LCD..

As I have mentioned in other posts, my room doesnt have direct sunlight and my watching habits are GEC, news, music, some sports and movies... & I have to make the decision urgently (have taken more than a month already and cant wait anymore)... Have considered / read reviews and visited multiple dealers of Panasonic (mainstay is still Plasma TV), samsung (Push LEDs but serious about Plasma also) & LG (least serious of the 3 for plasmas).. shortlisted models but then samsung is ruled out bcos of 1 yr warranty. Most of the people here suggest Panasonic>Samsung>LG but if you check avsforum, amazon etc etc LG has got its admirers as well and the products are good too.

I am getting 25% discount on MRP through some jugaad (for all LEDs & only LG Plasmas) so that changes price equation little bit... the models in my consideration are:

1. Pana 50X/XT50 - 60-64K (Have seen 42" - Looks gr8)
2. Pana 50UT50 - Quoted bw 75-85k. can try & stretch for it that too if I get it <75K.
3. LG 50PA6500 -FHD, no 3D, Smart getting for 56K (+10K for 2 yrs addn wrnty) so total around 66-67K (Have seen it - looks good). Almost same price as XT50 but with FHD and without 3D.

Although most of people will suggest panasonic however global reviews like http://www.avsforum.com/t/1390332/lg-50pa6500-and-lg-60pa6500-plasmas and Amazon etc suggest LG 6500 is a good piece and value for money.

So my criteria :

1. Good PQ with regular viewing habits assuming the quality of SD, HD channels we have at present (only # of HD Channels will increase) from STB..
2. FHD only if matters for 1 above.
3. Dont really need 3D but wont mind it for 2-3K more.
4. Do not intend to use it for any gaming device
5. Good warranty & after sales service in case of issues.
6. Best Value for money considering 1-5 above

Choices

1. 50X/XT50 @ 62-65K
2. 50UT50 @ 75K (if I get it at this price)
3. PA6500 @ 56K + 10k ext warranty.

@rajatk,

Frankly for HD DTH/Cable, at 8+ feet, I did not feel that 50ST50 was way superior. 1080i is not true HD. The ST50 outclassed when watching pure 1080p stuff via BDP. So I would say that UT50 will definitely not outclass XT50 (for 1080i, 720p) stuff when the NeoPDP, Infinite Black Pro, 2500 Hz, etc. of ST50 could not add much.

Besides, SD will look better on XT50. I went for ST50 because I watch a lot of original BD stuff.

Now this is as far as Panasonic is concerned. LG should not be bad but this forum is full of videophiles who look not much beyond Pioneer KURO and when KURO stopped, the next best is Panasonic. I would say that LG/Samsung will have definitely better service. 3D is good for 30 minutes (some may disagree) and it will be back to good old 2D later.

I will say that for a few days - stop visiting this forum.:ohyeah: Go with your gut feeling. I can feel that LG may be good for you.

You are saying this on the day when I have almost decided for Panasonic  especially since HT offer made the deal sweeter ...:sos:

I completely agree with Just4kix. You can only judge a television in 3 scenarious if its bad (a) compare it with a TV next to it which u cannot do in your house (b) Play reference material and keep looking for loopholes which happens only with videophiles and (c) something really wrong with the TV like dead pixels which may be a real issue.

Panasonic in India and rest of the world is bleeding like other Japanese companies. I dont think they even sell a reasonable fraction of what Samsung or LG sell. Proportion of tvs they sell in India compared to the biggies may be even worse. Just look at their campaign -they do not even mention once that they have garnered all the best reviews in the world. when most people go to the showrooms am sure they dont even ask for Panasonics.

so the sale of panasonics in india is limited to videophiles who know what they are buying. May be that is the reason why they offer 3yrs warranty because they cannot hold their own against the biggies.

Today I went to reliance digital and looked at samsung 720p TV sellng at 61K. Most people dont even consider that TV and frankly when compared to LEDs next to it, it was looking really bad. In fact on this TV he was playing actual cable TV while rest of the TVs had HD material. But when I specifically mentioned that I wanted a samsung plasma..he took me to his home theatre room where they had this 50incher on display. Inside the room sitting all alone, if some one had hidden its name - I would have guessed that it was a costlier sony or samsung. again this is purely layman viewing.

I took downloaded 1gb movies of toy story 3 and UP - again the 3D didnt really stand out as extraordinary and it was a pure novelty

Hence I am sure the ST50 is very good and GT and VT are even better. But the only question to ask is whether you will pay 40% more than a similar Samsung TV?

And I agree with you again... once we have the TV at our place, all these comparisons/analysis wont matter. So its all about checking out few models from the stores, check web and look out for features and then buy the one that appeals to you the best and suits your budget.

I have been to all the stores (LG, Samsung, Panasonic) multiple times and dont really think any of these TVs were any different from each other - ofcourse I have only seen limited models (51E470, XT50, LA6500) and while the look and design were different and suit different ppl differently (42" Panasonics look awesome) the PQ etc were not much different atleast in showrooms. So it finally depends on your gut feeling and the package/deal you are getting at the max..

HT deal is a lot of crap IMHO. No one is buying these teeny-weeny pretend HT's. So they are offloading non-moving stock. They may stop production of that HT model very soon. Who knows. Now I may be biased because I have a better HT. But given a choice, I would rather have a BDP instead.

As I said, don't go by reviews alone. Go with your gut feel and decide what works best for you.

Sure - I will do that.

50UT50 - 77K

Enjoy the monsoon...

I purchased a Panasonic 42 inch Plasma TV model 42ST30D from Sargam Electronics, Rajouri Garden, Delhi. They assured me that the TV is sealed and new unit and Never Used. After Installing I found that the TV has signs of wear on rear. I checked the usage hours of the Set (Thanks to HiFi vision for providing knowledge and awareness :signthankspin:) and it was SHOCKING to found that the TV was used for more that 1300Hrs !!!!
I called up the Sargam guys and they denied initially but confessed later on that this was used as a Demo piece for 6-7 months.
they offered me a discount of 2.5 thousand, ( Sharam nahi aati $#%@ ko :mad:). They finally agreed to refund my full money and took back the TV.
Sharing this fact with all of You guys on Hifi. Please be aware of this. DON'T purchase any thing from SARGAM ELECTRONICS.
Dont buy any 42ST30D Plasma from them they have only one piece left which I returned. The Serial number of Set is QN1310067..
Please share this Serial number with all your friends seeking Panasonic Plasma in Delhi NCR so that any other innocent should not get cheated.
