Why have speakers and especially home theatre speakers become so expensive?

Prices are quite lower in UAE too. I am going to Abu Dhabi next month but I really don't know if I should go through the hassle of getting one from there and if custom duties are levied, it might work around to the same pricing as in India.
On a recent US trip I got a VTV power amp. (and some other smaller electronics - tubes, cables etc.) without any hassles. Of-course the amp. was just $700 vs $3500 for the Marantz, but it appeared that customs was looking for gold, hidden in body orifices rather than larger electronic items in check-in baggage.
Cheers,
Sid

Just for example Marantz SR6015 AVR sold for around 1 plus lacs just before covid shot up to 2Plus Lacs after covid, which shows the same unit sold for 100% price increase, which shows hifi enthusiasts never stop buying the stuff to satisfy their soul and they are crazy to spend and also womens will not stop buying tomato if sold for 200inr per kg too. Both food and hifi are part of human life and it will be bought at quoted price.
Tomato rate has crashed to 10/- per kg now, people are still buying 1 or 2 Kg only, slightly more than its 200/kg days. If Marantz sales the same gear for 10,000 Rs , the sales will plummet as it will no more be a "desired" product , even with no changes in specs. Human Nature!

Yes.. Same marantz quoted 2.75 Lacs just after covid now getting quoted for 1.35 L since supply has resumed, so that tomato too..

While inflation, Covid etc could be valid reasons, they don’t explain the particularly dire situation in audiophile products. In my view, it’s down to being a highly imperfect/inefficient market - with low volumes. So, when demand or supply exceeds the other, market forces don’t automatically work to adjust it. So any such trigger that induces a supply shortage or demand surge for a product gets cashed upon by the market players.

This would continue as long as the market remains a niche - which I doubt would change in India given our penchant for cost over quality.
