I have purchased a LG Smart TV but it requires a wifi dongle specially manufactured by LG to connect to internet. This wifi dongle cost around Rs.4000/- which I think is not worth it. I was just thinking if I could buy a wifi extender and connect it to the TV using the LAN port in the wifi extender which I would place near the TV. Another advantage is that it has 4 LAN ports and later I can also connect other items like Blu-ray player, Xbox etc... in case required. Would this work?

I also identified a router/wifi extender in ebay.

The router you selected has Ethernet ports and not gigabit, if you are buying one time better buy a gigabit port router

If you can make this your internet router directly by connecting the internet wire / modem then you do not need a wireless bridge.

If not then Wireless Bridge is the option to go for you where the Bridge will connect to your main internet router wirelessly.

ebay seller has this router for less price and I also have a 10% coupon which could bring down the price further. Here is the link-

Asus RT-N10+ Wireless N Router With Repeater Mode 150Mbps 4-in-1 High Speed WIFI | eBay

I hope this would work with LG TV assuming that LG would not have complicated it by making only the USB dongle work with the TV. The TV has a LAN port so I just need to connect this router with RJ45 cable to the TV and since I already have a wireless network the signal would be picked up by the Asus router/repeater and the LG TV would get connected to the internet.
Hope I got this correct or I am I missing anything.

So LG too is going by Sony & Apple way..? by proprietary add ons?

No...I don't know that yet. Hope that a wifi repeater works instead of the wifi dongle tha LG asks to buy which costs around Rs.4000. I got this idea and wanted to try out.

Placed an order for 1 as was looking for an extender either ways. Will try it with the Sony BDP 490 via lan as well. Unfortunately delivery is really so (about 10 days) in spite of Pepperfry being in Mumbai too.

Hi,

The wireless solution (of any kind) might not work for HD movies. I noticed the 20Mbps (12GB+ BDRips) tend to not play smoothly. At the same time it works really will with wired connection.

Hello Experts,

So can the ASUS then be my single Wifi Router at home, having connected to the RJ45 from a ISP, I can sue this router to connect my laptop and other devices as well.

Is this ASUS Wireless (150 Mbps) Router Repeater RT-N10 good enough for a 3 BHK or I need a repeater as well? IF yes, then do I need to buy a similar one?

Ash

Not really sure about this one but I've been using a Linksys WRT 310N (an older model)for the last couple of years & it nearly covers my entire house (4bhk approx 3000 sq ft), except for my kitchen. Its placed in the centre though which probably helps.

Dont know about this model but the Asus RT-N16 should be perfect for your area.

Remember that a repeater will make your network bandwidth to half so it will work for you as long as you are not planning for HD youtube video viewing or streaming movies over Wifi where the source is connected to the main router that acts as your internet gateway.

There is no direct thumb rule for this. Remember, every home is different in terms of the walls, obstructions and interference and hence the actual result will also vary. Refer this thread for some discussion that already happened for some router coverage / throughput related problems and solutions.

Buy a router seeing its antenna upgradability and of course the transmit power. In my signature you will find an example of custom modding a router.

Hmmm...that is exactly what I was planning to do but not viewing youtube HD videos but was thinking of streaming movies using the TV as a client.

Hi, I am not sure, whether you have purchased something by now. But, I would recommend Powerline adapter for this purpose. I have 4 of this and one near my TV and then connected a 4 port Wi Fi Router, so that, I could connect my XBox, AC Ryan, Marantz SR5006, TATA SKY HD etc. One Powerline Adapter should connect to the ADSL Modem thru wired, and another one near the TV in the power socket. It works perfect no cabling and as well no breaks for even full HD movies! I bought TP Powerline 500MBPS for 40GBP a pair. It got very good reviews. Moreover, their support was good as well, when I had some issue setting up 4 adapters. M2C.

Regards
